Just the thought of switching out my entire closet gave me a migraine. I actually don't wear heavy wools and velvets and corduroys and whatever I once thought of as "winter" fabrics. I wear modern fabrics and blends and since I live in MA, I have clothes that I wear for "three seasons" and I have summer clothes. I store sweaters and tunics and long pants in those storage cubes or hassocks and some things, I just push to the back of my closet to make room for my summer things. When summer is over, I reverse the process. It's automatic, I don't even think about it.

I’ve never had much interest in clothing; don’t like shopping for it or spending money for it. I only buy poly cotton blend clothing that works year round, only my coats are seasonal, so I don’t ever need to switch things out based on the calendar.
I am considering moving the 20 items currently hanging in my closet, into my husbands closet, and then adding shelves to turn my closet into a storage area for sheets.

I could never get rid of the warm winter clothes I have....to cold in the midwest.

@RetRN wrote:I downsized and purged my closets when I retired. So, now I no longer need to switchout the closet. It is wonderful and so much easier.
I did the same when retiring, @RetRN and moving into senior housing (apartment). Trying not to accumulate too much clothing or shoes that I won't need again.
As others here have said who live in the 4-seasons regions, I do shift the colder weather garments to the back as the warmer seasons come to PA. Mine is a walk-in closet, though not so large as those in most houses. More like a step-in closet, I guess. It has drawers, too, and I likewise move the warmer season apparel and shoes up to the top drawers for easier access.
Haven't started yet, but when I do, I'll wash all the warm weather pieces as I go. What I need is more coat storage, That closet, near the front door is tiny. I need to hang onto the several coats and jackets, blazers and heavier sweaters that are stored there. I will look into one of the under bed storage units that others mentioned above. Thanks for the tips, ladies! 😊

I am retired and have all kinds of clothes that perhaps I will never wear again. Not totally sure since we travel and we dance in different places. I am going to get a start on it and consolidate.. my goal for 2018

No. I've never lived in a place where this was practical or where I had a wardrobe that necessitated it. It can be 80 degrees or 32 degrees in January here. It was 44 yesterday and expected to be 70 today. Some January days it might be icy and another I'm having dinner on the patio because it's beautiful out there.
I have very few heavy winter items and mostly go with layers so my 'winter' sweaters are the saame as my fall/spring sweaters but with different layering combinations.
My warm weather clothing is always out because I need those 12 months out of the year.

My main closet never changes.
I do have medium weight jackets in a different closet near the front door. Heavier ones in a spare bedroom closet. Seldom need those.

@Mom2Dogswrote:It's only February and I am NOT ready to change out my closet but I am looking at some of the clothing items that I am not ready to part with....velvet items, a nice skirt...all are very nice but did not wear this year...it has been brutally cold and wearing skirts/dresses was not an option. I am wondering if you all pack everything away each season or leave some things hanging in the closet all year?
I have 4 under the bed zippered canvas storage bags that I use every season...putting away one season and unpacking the current season of clothes....just thinking about leaving the dressier things hanging in the closet all year long.....
thanks!
@Mom2Dogs First, don’t hate me, but my walk in closet is quite large...11X12 and 10’ high. Being short, I have double hanging rods all around and an upper level (think dry cleaners) for my off season clothes. My dresser is built in on one wall and shelves for shoes and sweaters are also built in.
I’ve tried, since the NC seasons have become more winter and summer than 4 seasons like when I was growing up, to have mostly what I call 3 season clothing...Except for a few cashmere or wool sweaters and my coats, a lot of my clothing stays “down” now and the upper rods are almost empty.
I do switch out shoes/sandals/boots into lg. clear storage bins on an upper shelf.
To finally answer your question, I don’t “do” dressy...don’t even own skirts or dresses. The most dressed I get is silk trousers and dressy blouse...not acceptable for the invitation, I’d rather stay home. I did have to purchase long gowns for each child’s wedding....walked down the aisle, ate dinner, danced, etc. and donated them the following week.

@ECBGwrote:On my side in the closet, I hang long skirts, any type of jacket (not outerwear), and my "third piece" like several black cardigan or longer mid length drapey substitute for a jacket.) My jeans go on my 2 shelves and DH has his tees and jeans on the remaining shelves.
My work tees and light sweaters are kept on a shelving unit in the laundry room. I always ironed for work after the news and would have disturbed him in the closet trying to find things.
DH's shirts, blazers, and dress slacks are on his 2/3 side with an upper and lower rod which ends with the wall that holds up the shelves.
My outerwear is in the entrance hall closet. DH will only wear a blazer. His coats only come out when it's 20 degrees, LOL!!!
When I "change" things, I change the tops and sweaters in the laundry room and keep them in tubs in the basement.
@ECBG Somehow I expected you to be totally fashion organized. 😜

@Shanus,With antiques, one has to be creative! The dressers were small. They didn't have a lot of clothes (no QVC!). I don't have a double or tripple dresser or a chest of drawers like most people. I have my grandmother's crystal vanity which almost covers one wall, a Victorian drop center vanity, and a large wooden trunk for storage. This is almost exactly like mine.
