Many anesthetists have relaxed the no liquids after midnight for elective surgery and instead allow liquids up to two hours before.

This rule was initiated in the 60's because the anesthesia used back then caused vomiting.  If this got into the lungs, often the patient got pneumonia.  With today's better anesthesia this is a rare occurrence.

Many surgeries are preformed with a full stomach with no adverse affects, especially after an accident.

Soon, the midnight rule will be only used very rarely.  There is really no need to go without liquids that long for most people.

Thanks,Big, for the lecture.  We will try to do better next time.  And I'm very sure they will charge us. That should cheer you up.

It was postponed for a good reason.  I think you were not supposed to have the procedure done until the 14th, for some good reason.  It may be a blessing in disguise.

That's kind of what I thought. Everything happens for a reason.  We felt bad and my husband is usually very good at listening to and following orders. But for some reason he slipped up.  We think alike @Big Sister.

@MoJoV Your husband is not alone in making that mistake. I worked in preop for years and it happens. I am glad he was truthful. Every anesthesia provider has their own thoughts on NPO status and it does vary. I wish your husband well on the 14th-just hold that coffee with cream🌹

My husband's shoulder surgery is postponed til the 14th. He drank a cup of coffee with cream at 4am and we were to be at hospital at 5:30. He thought it would be ok. Well,no. He was all gowned up, etc. They told us no luquids but apparently we aren't too sharp at 4am.

Just wanted to thank you all for kind words.Keep them for us til the 14th. đź’ž

That's doubtful.  When you are scheduled to be there it takes about an hour or two before the surgery is actually preformed.  Coffee probably wouldn't hurt unless it was stomach surgery.

i once had  emergency surgery right after I ate a meal of deep fried shrimp with cocktail sauce, French fries and Cole slaw.

@MoJoV,   You can swish water around in your mouth when you brush your teeth but if he was told nothing to drink then it is nothing.  Be glad you go first early in the morning.  How would your husband like to have an 11 a.m. surgery with no drinking?
