Went to take the garbage out this morning, and noticed all the trees in the neighborhood are finally getting their leaves! Including mine! As it's my first year in this house, I didn't know what to expect. The maples at my last house always seemed to be out early.
Heard we had a dry April here in central Illinois, but got a good deal of soaking rain the last day and a half, and I guess that's all we needed. Even the bush by the house looked alive. Wish I knew what everything was!
And re: May Day baskets. We did that also, in the 50's. Never seen it since.
Happy May!

@summerwind I know what you mean. In SE Michigan we got a couple of days of rain and it's like someone waved a magic wand. Grass is green, leafy shrubs and trees are blooming.

Gorgeous here today. Our neighbor next to us has a carpet of yellow dandelions. Pretty til they turn white. Some of the seeds have found some bare spots In Lawn and flower beds. We've been trying to dig them out as they appear but sure hope that lawn service gets here soon. The neighbor doesn't do anything but mow his with a dull blade which just bends them over.
No Freddie we can't use the sunroom year around. We can use a heater if it is sunny and get temp up in the winter but the floors are cold. We do have floor heat but don't use it because of expense.
The cardinal pair that cone In The spring are back. They've been hopping in the dogwoods. So pretty against the blossoms. They've been feeding each other which I think is a sign that they're an official couple and new birds will be coming.

Since it's getting warm out there I added some chairs by the Back Fence.

Hello, I hope my fellow posters had a good weekend. It's cooled down a bit around here and I think the high is expected to reach the mid-60's. Nice temps for me to cut my grass.
I live next door to a woman who is crazy competitive about lawn mowing. When my retired husband was alive he would mow the grass while I was at work. He'd often tell me that no matter when the neighbor had cut her grass, the day he would cut ours, she would come out and cut her grass again. I didn't doubt him entirely, I more or less took the comment with a grain of salt.
I think my husband was on to something
Neighbor's son in law had cut her grass a few days before I cut mine last week Monday. The minute I walked into my backyard, she was out front re-cutting hers.
I'm going to test my theory today. Her daughter cut her grass either Friday or Saturday. I'm about to go out and cut mine. We'll see what happens ![]()

@Bird mama I believe it. Growing up, the sister of the neighbor family next door lived there, and she moved that lawn within an inch of it's life, lol, then hand watered. I think she just had to keep busy. The neighbor lady said her sister drove her nuts, as she would go around emptying ashtrays, only her sister smoked, if one butt was in it, lol, a whirling dervish. She worked, and when she retired, then she bought a house for herself, interesting.
Pretty much everyone on the block had manicured lawns, done by themselves, but my Mother had cement put in, lol, worked, and had no time to be mowing.

Back to dreary weather here at my part of the fence. I need to get myself together, hit the Post Office to return the recent sunglass TSV I ordered from the Q. Nice glasses, shape is too bulky for my face. This was one time that one size did not fit all :-)
I am getting my first oil change on the car I bought last fall. These newer cars are on a 6 month, 5,000 mile schedule and I've met the time frame if not the miles.
I also need to stop at the grocery store on the way home from the service department. My postal carrier put the food collection notice in my mail box yesterday. Cutting it kind of close ![]()

Cloudy day here today and much cooler. All the trees popped out at once and they are very pretty. Our neighbor behind us mowed our lawn for us. I guess he realized merle has been so busy it had not received its usual care. It wasn't that bad, really. We both had our lawns treated by his brother In Law. We are trying to keep the other neighbors dandelions from creeping over. I will admit the two lawns mowed at the same time looked very nice. The dandelion yard is now sticks with white seeded heads. I have never seen them so thick. We have dandelions in other yards close to us but nothing like this. The family has been having some problems that appeared in the paper. Right now they don't want to make eye contact with us but hope it will get sorted out I'm sure not going to bother her about her weeds.
Read on the birds nest about your duckling adventure, Bernie. You are a special person and deserve your title of birdmama.
Freddie will you have the little ones with you on Mother's Day? Hope your day is happy.
Many of us no longer have our moms with us on earth but we still have memories of special times. My sisters and I always gave our mother dark pink carnations. Remember when you only wore white flowers when your mom had died. Mother did not want red flowers like all the others had so we settled for dark pink.
Everyone at the fence I hope you have a wonderful weekend. My post is getting too long so I will make it a group hug.

To my friends at the Back Fence, I wish you....

I'm leaving a 7-up cake. Tastes good with coffee or tea ![]()

Am looking forward to have some free time to watch the upcoming festivities in England. Always have enjoyed watching what goes on there with their royalty. Guess the reason is my Mother's family is PURE British and I have followed their doings since a small child. Of course way back when there was no TV but we had LIFE Magazines - they were great. Also short wave radios. Can still see my Grandmother especially listening to the radio and she received the magazines - always interesting. Not always happy however.
Got a couple major errands to attend to today. YUCK!!!!! Has to be done - little ones are with Kerry and Sherry and they will also stay tonight - at least. That is a help.
Have a great day everyone!!
