Sometimes I wonder how humans still reign

[ Edited ]

Yesterday I took the remainder of my deceased dog's topical flea medication to a neighbor who has a similarly sized dog, but younger.

I mentioned to her that I had had my dog for eight years, 8 of her total 16.

She looked at me sadly and said, "I've had my dog for 8 years."

Her dog is only 9 years old.

OK. I’m the one.

I always thought I was a pinch “smarter than the average bear (!),”

but you need to unpack this one for me.

Your dog was 16 but you got her at age 8.....ownership 8 yrs.

Her dog is 9 but...she got him when he was at 1...ownership 8 yrs?

To me, she was expressing the same 8 yr ownership.

What am I missing?

I too, am confused by the post?

You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

@sidsmom and @hckynut and @KingstonsMom

Because she thought her dog was about to die, as if having a pet for 8 years was somehow the magic limit on the number of years a dog could live with a human.

If you had seen her sad face, she really believed it.  I had to explain it to her.

@GingerPeach.  I didn't get it either but thought I was missing something.  Thanks for explaining.

@GingerPeach  Oh Lord, I shouldn't but this really made me laugh.

There are many elements: wind, fire, water

Am I missing something???    It makes sense to me, she got her dog 8 years ago when the dog was 1 years old.  Hence....he's now 9 years old.

Thank you for explaining it to me @GingerPeach. Know what you mean about reading people much better by their facial expressions. I think nowadays, with so minimal face to face communicating, to many, they think a facial emogy/icon suffices. Maybe to some, but I am old and also old fashioned. My preference for communication is still face to face, in real life, not Skype and those forms.

Thanks again,
