I have a friend who lost her husband to Alzheimer's.  She now fills the time gardening and volunteering.  There are many places that can use your help with no special skills needed.  Check with the hospitals, those are filled with volunteers and if that isn't your cup of tea those people can steer you elsewhere.

I posted earlier but I don't see it in the comments. I appreciate everyone's responses and for being helpful and kind. I do get out of the house because I am a retired teacher and most school districts are desperate for subs. My back injury is recent and I completed physical therapy in May. I can actually stand and walk better than sitting for long periods. I will check into YWCA about water aerobics. Meet up was a great suggestion and I have already inquired about the topics I am interested in. The local library should know about a book club. I am an avid reader. I was pretty sure that volunteering would be suggested. I know I don't care to volunteer for a hospital or nursing home. My mother's death is too recent for me to deal with the elderly. I have a mean ornery cat so adding a dog is out of the question. I enjoy crafts so I can inquire about classes at the local garden and arts center or Michael's and Hobby Lobby. I have friends. They are just busy with husband's, children, and some have grandchildren. This will be an ongoing  situation as I age because eventually I will stop subbing. I was just looking for suggestions other than some I had come up. Thank you for your replies.

@texassunflower   I enjoy crafts too and have an Etsy store...it helps to keep me busy and it's nice to make some extra cash...plus it feels great when strangers actually want to purchase something that I've made!

I also play Mah Jongg every Monday afternoon with a group of retired women.  One of the ladies in my group has no children and has never been married either.  She keeps busy with lots of activities such as traveling with other women (there are groups for just women to meet & travel), going to museums and joining exercise classes.

I hope you can find some fun & interesting things where you can meet & make new friends!
