I will see her in a few weeks and am trying to decide if I should give them back which would make her mad, or lie and tell her they are fine and just donate them. What would you do?
No, don't lie.
What if she thinks she's glad you like them, and she buys you another pair for this holiday? Yikes!

I agree. Maybe she could exchange them for the proper size. m

@geegerbee depends on how close a friend, no close friend of mine would reply with the comment made by your friend

ITA ... weird comment, IMO.

I wouldn't say anything more about them. Hopefully, they will shrink and be useful to you. If not, you're not out anything. Gratitude is knowing someone cared enough to think of you.

Don't lie.
Even though these are slippers and not socks I would still wash them and see how they turn out.
If your friend ask about them, there's always something positive that can be said. You love the color/pattern, they're so soft, they seem so warm, they seem so well made...

@geegerbee I guess your friend is ignorant to the fact that falls can be deadly.
I wouldn't wear them unless they'd fit inside a boot. But usually those slipper socks are too thick. I don't wear my boots a size too big to accomodate.....
If she asks about them again, tell her you were afraid of falling, again. I'd also tell her that I found it hurtful that she said to pick up your feet. Sheesh.

It appears to me that your friend expected glowing praise for her gift but when she learned that you feared falling because the socks were too big, she got huffy and made the snide comment. I wouldn't bring it up if she doesn't and agree with the suggestion of trying to shrink the socks first or ultimately donate them. Moving forward, I'm sure you will handle the situation with kindness toward your friend.

geegerbee, I'd just tell the the friend they are too big on you.
Nothing wrong with that.
(that was kinda snippy of her to tell you to "pick up your feet."
