Some of the shoplifters do get caught, but the punishment is so light that they are back on the street without serving any jail time.

I've been on eBay since 2003 (actually since 2000 with a different ID).... and have been very involved in the Fashion/Purse & Accessory Board and learned of several big time sellers (and some smaller sellers) of Designer clothing/bags being busted big time.
One lady made millions from a scam she developed, but was busted with several mistakes when selling. If it makes anyone feel better, eBay takes it very seriously and there can be ways to uncover the thieves. Not everyone or always of course, but they have people who are specifically trained to watch the sales.
They do try but the reality is that they cannot catch all of them, they can't even catch a small fraction of them. I think the ones they catch are probably the amateurs not the big cheeses who make millions off stolen merchandise.

I was very surprised to learn that employees are told to ignore shoplifters, even if they are shoving merchandise into a bag right in front of them! Why? Because that is not the job they were trained for, and if they got injured by the shoplifter, it would be a big legal hassle for the company. The only people who can do anything about shoplifters are Security personnel .... or Management, but there are limitations.
It's less costly to be out a mere $100 for a pair of jeans than a $20,000 personal injury claim against the company for an employee getting seriously hurt. What if the shoplifter had a knife or gun with them?

I was recently in a store that I rarely visit, and was shopping near the front door when a young woman and man started out and set off the alarm. I noticed that nobody did anything to stop their exit. I asked the nearest salesperson, and was told that they have determined it is easier, less expensive, and avoids lawsuits by just letting them go. If they tried to stop the couple, they would have to pay for lawyers to prosecute them and just possibly be sued for "false arrest". Surprised, but I guess that's the way of the world these days - at least for this store.

My DD and I walked into Target at the same time a guy with a cart full of groceries walked out. He pretended like he was heading to the in-store Starbucks but then dashed out the door. Takes some big ones, if you catch my drift

Yesterday at Mother's Day dinner, my father-in-law told my husband and me that a good friend of him and my mother-in-law's was standing at a lottery ticket machine in the grocery store with her cart of groceries pushed to the side of her but only about 2 feet away. While she was putting her money in the machine, someone walked off with her cartload of groceries!

About three years ago when I was a top seller in the fine jewelry dept. at an anchor store, a guy tried to leave with a $6000 Levian chocolate diamond ring.
I had felt things were a little "off" and had told him I needed my glasses, walked a few steps away with the ring and wore the glasses back. I had called security. They came down and were behind the racks all around me. When he took an eight foot leap, they dropped him and cuffed him. Turns out he had robbed Kay Jewelers and Helsburg in the same mall.

Both of my sons went after shop lifters when they were young men with grocery store jobs working and going to college. One had a tequila bottle smashed across his face by the thief ans suffered a broken nose and facial bones. The other one had a case of beer smashed over his head and nearly died of a brain hemorrhage.
