Re: School so starting way to early

Private schools in my area (SW Michigan) started this week. Most public schools start next week, but there are a couple of straglers that start after Labor Day.

Re: School so starting way to early

Public schools in this southern county of WV open tomorrow.  Parents here don't complain as much about school starting before Labor Day, as long as the start date is AFTER the WV State Fair, which starts on the 2nd Thursday of August and runs for 10 days.

Thousands of WV students are very active in 4-H and Future Farmers of America groups and are major participants in the fair for the entire 10 days.  They bring the animals they've raised, and don't go home until the fair is over.  The students who don't raise animals are in the clubs that have concession booths, so they are busy covering shifts from 8 a.m. until midnight for 10 days.  Students are busy directing cars looking for parking in yards, church lots, etc.  Every gas station, store and restaurant in the town of Lewisburg, WV, needs extra employees to cover the extended hours during Fair days.  The Fair is a huge economic boost for the state.

Our students went back July 31.  I did attendance for 25 years.  School must be in session for 180 days per year no matter when it starts & ends.

SWPA our local school district this year starts 9/3; finishes 6/10/25.  Other districts here just started this week.

School started back here August 12. When I went to school I remember we always returned after Labor Day.

Re: School so starting way to early

School starts today, Aug 23, here. Our state law specifies the date so it it after the state fair but before Labor Day.

We have too many snow days that have to be made up during winter break, spring break, and at the end of the year. Kids are ready to go for the summer by the end of May so making up too many then can be a challenge to and teachers and kids.

I'm surprised that there's such a thing as snow days now.  Kids learned how to work from home during the pandemic.  Seems like it would work for snow days, too.

Re: School so starting way to early

The counties in northern and central Delaware start the last week of August.  The counties in southern Delaware near the beaches start after labor day so that beach businesses have student labor until the end of summer.

I work in a school district as a speech language pathologist who assesses preschool students for special education services.  I work per diem during the summer but my first day back for full time work was Tuesday.  I have off today and next Friday.  This week was professional development and time to set up classrooms for teachers.  K-12 students start Monday and Special Education Pre-K starts the day after Labor day. At the end of last and year and this year I will be providing speech therapy to some pre -k special education students at a bilingual (Spanish/English) day care in our district.

I doubt teachers can get to school to get to their books and plans for a whole day if there is a blizzard. Some is online but not everything. I also doubt they would haul home everything each night - just in case.

Also, I live in a midwest state that consistently slashes funding for public schools and electronics/systems adequate to teach/learn online.

Re: School so starting way to early

Our town used to start after Labor Day. A few years ago that was changed. Schools in our town started this morning. It was due to the Snow days. Some years schools were getting out in late June.
The businesses were up in arms about the change. There goes their Summer help. Most tourists were still here till Labor Day.
