Re: SO SICK OF TELEMARKETING CALLS

There is hope:

Apple, Google, Microsoft join 'strike force' to fight robocalls

The biggest tech, cable and telecom companies are all coming together to fight the arch nemesis of consumers: robocalls.

Apple, Google, MicrosoftComcast and Verizon joined more than two dozen other companies for the first meeting of the boldly named "Robocall Strike Force" at the Federal Communications Commission on Friday.

Some robocalls break the law by ignoring the Do Not Call registry or engaging in identity theft attempts. Others, like calls from telemarketers, "are perfectly legal, but unwanted," Stephenson explained.

"If we truly want to deal with this, the entire ecosystem has to work together -- carriers, device makers, OS developers, network designers," he said. "And don't forget, regulators and lawmakers have a role to play."

Get an Answering Machine!!    I have posted this before. You can set it at 1 or how many rings you want.  I had my number unlisted and they still called. I ask once "how did you get my number" he said all he had was a piece of paper with numbers on and he had no clue who or where he was calling. With a machine when they call the machine picks up and  gradually stop calling. I have very few now. If it someone you want to talk to just call them back.

I have a good answering machine, it does not stop the intrusions.  Meaning the continual noise from the calls, wondering if you should get up to answer in case it's a family member or let it ring.

And then there's the annoyance of having to clear your phone over and over should they leave a message, which does happen.

Re: SO SICK OF TELEMARKETING CALLS

I answer the telemarketing calls and tell them they called "Pizza Place" and do they want to order.  They tell me no and take my number off... I have fun with them...  I know it's their job but they are very annoying and I have gone on the "do not call list" many times.  The best is when they tell me I will be arrested and go to jail if I don't pay some money.  One guy said I owed back taxes of $3500 and how did I want to pay.  I told him I was calling my accountant and he hung up... Jerks...

GOOD NEWS:

The technology giants, including Google and several other big ones, are working together to use technology to fight the unwanted calls because they get them, too.  They have joined together in the San Francisco Bay Area for this purpose.

Yay!  Fingers crossed.   I've resorted to not only turning off the ringers on my phones, but I also turned off the voicemail feature.

It is beyond maddening that this stuff can happen.    It's patently wrong and that there are those who are in the pockets of others, which keeps this stuff exempt from the do not call list,  just really ires me to no end.

I even had to turn off the voicemail on my cell phone because it is starting to get them.   That ticks me off even more.

I think we should have the right to privacy with the services WE pay for and nobody else should have the right to use them without our permission.  That, of course, includes auto-dialing. THAT should be against the law.

I don't give any of our phone numbers out beyond my father, a couple of friends, and the dentist's office.  My cell phone number only my husband and my father have.   Yet, both of those numbers get numerous calls a day.

Ugh!!!

The DNC list is a joke.  Between telemarketers, charities, spammers, and political phone calls it was never ending hearing the phone ring.

I gave up my house line 10 days ago.  Bliss!

I always had a land line because of my mom in case we needed immediate help.  Comcast did me the favor of inadverently cutting off said land line and three different operators told me the couldn't help because it was with AT&T so the next day I upgraded my ancient flip phone to the most basic phone that is now being offered and I have never looked back.

About a month ago I had car trouble and I was pleasantly surprised that the roadside assistance knew exactly where I was (you know, sobbing on the side of the road next to a McDonald's and a PayDay Loan and yes they knew that!) so I know if I need help 911 will be able to locate me too.

I do feel sorry for whomever ends up with that recycled number as they will be bombarded with senior related calls for the next year or so . . . sigh.

Re: SO SICK OF TELEMARKETING CALLS

I have found that, at least this election season, once I started to ask to be removed from their list, I have been receiving far fewer calls.  One of them told me that there are some organizations, such as political, who are not bound by the no call list.  Many businesses and organizations sell their contact list.   Anytime you give out your number, grocery store, favorite boutique, etc they can sell your number or so I was told when I called BBB to see how to stop calls.  I turned my dial tone down so I hear it only when near my desk. My house is much more peaceful now and I did not have to give up the phone.  I need the contact with local emergency contacts but I do not need one of those necklaces.  My calls from my house phone automatically tells them where I am calling from.

Comsumer report on TV a couple of nights ago:

They now have the means to call cell phones.

NO ONE has my cell phone number except my husband and daughter, yet I have received two calls, one came when I was at rest in the hospital cardio unit.

Hi there, I am not a regular on here but sometimes just check in and look around.  You guys have given me such good information on here that I have to share this.  Go to "No More Robo" and sign up.  When a call comes through that is a recording or telemarketer, your phone rings only once then is automatically answered by this service.  I signed up for this and do not get any telemarketer/recorded calls come through.  If my phone rings once and that's it,  I know  it was a telemarketer or recorded call.  Here's the link:

Have a great day!  :-)

well, it sounded like a great idea.  This service is not supported by Century Link.  I tried.

Re: SO SICK OF TELEMARKETING CALLS

Exactly!  Unfortunately, nomorobo doesn't work for all carriers.  A lot of main carriers are excluded.  I hope that gets expanded at some point, however.

Re: SO SICK OF TELEMARKETING CALLS

I have an answering machine.  I actually have voice mail through cable, but also have a machine.   That does not stop them at all.  For example.  Today, got a call at 9:00 am, then around 10 am, then around 11:00 am.  Then at 12:30.  All from New Jersey.   Finally at 12:30 I answered and of course they as for my hubby who passed away 6 months ago.  I screamed in phone and said  "I told you people that he passed and DO NOT CALL HERE AGAIN".  Hung up on them.  No calls after that, but I promise they will wait a few days and start again.   None of the numbers can you call back on.  Cable co said that they are coming from over seas and it just shows like they are in U.S.   THey have no way to stop them.

I know it is a pain, but I may seriously change the number.  If my hubby would have been able to afford his breathing medications here in the U.S.  we would not have had to go to another country for them.  But the money hungry Pharmacy companies could care less.
