Re: *****SHABBAT SHALOM JULY 25TH******

@Flying Dove   My battery operated ones were Oticon and had an APP on my phone to raise or lower volume and let me know when batteries were running low. I was so tired from all the testing yesterday (and flabergasted by increase in price in the 7 yrs.) that I didn't ask the brand. Lol

Belated Happy Anniversary to you, too.

Thank you @cindyNC . I did struggle at first many years ago, but can barely hear w/o them so had to s*ck it up and wear them.

Thanks for the good wishes. I'll pass them on.

@nyc1   Thanks. I've been watching the weather on the east coast and know NC aren't the only ones sweating out this hot/humid weather.

Have a great weekend and stay cool.

Re: *****SHABBAT SHALOM JULY 25TH******

@Shanus ,   I wear Phonak hearing aides.

I started losing hearing as a child due to chronic ear infections and lack of care...but some of it is also hereditary...my dad's side.  But they started late in life with loss.

I'm very pleased with Phonak.  All is customized on computer my audiologist does...we sit together and adjust the pitches as she tests me.  I can also adjust volume manually.   I also use the phonak app, which is great!!  My phone calls go straight to my aides, crystal clear, and I don't have to talk into my phone either. I'm also alerted to texts and calls...almost like wearing ear buds...only I can hear, no one around me.

They are the rechargeable type, that go into a little dehumidifier charger.  3 hours is all it takes, and they last 12 hours.  I just place them in overnight, no worries...they stop charging automatically.

I HATE living with this hearing loss...I literally have anxiety about it if I have an important meeting, or appt...and even some phone calls if someone has a heavy accent.

I'm also ashamed...its terrible to have people repeat themselves...im always apologizing.

My drs actually recommended cochlear implants...but im not doing that.

Good luck with yours and everything you've got going on.

I'm always busy busy here and I take my 6 yr old grandson during summer breaks between his camp.

Heat index to climb over 116°..its AWFUL!!

Take care everyone!!

Just a note to hearing aide users on this forum. I highly recommend that you get your HA's only from a credentialed person, one who holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association if you are not already doing this. They will usually have the letters CCC-A after their names and will hold either a Master's or Doctoral degree in Audiology. Their knowledge and ability to fit you with the right HA is far superior to that of most HA dealers, who have limited formal training.

Some universities with graduate programs in Audiology also fit HA's at more  affordable prices than other places. Brand and price are important but far from the whole story in selecting HA's.

I have a graduate degree in a related field and try to keep up to date on developments in the HA industry.

Re: *****SHABBAT SHALOM JULY 25TH******

@Dazlin  I appreciate your sharing your hearing loss story. The audiologists think I may have started losing my hearing in college because I gravitated to the front row of all my classes. I was thinking I would see better, but when I had my first hearing test, it registered so badly they said this could not be a loss of hearing as a recent adult. I was almost a self taught lip reader.

The brand of mine are ReSound. I just went to look at the APP on my phone. Mine are also bluetoothed to my ears (like ear buds) and go in the charger, but the audiologist said I get 30 hrs. of "juice" from each time I take them out of the charger. The charger also contains a backup power for a few days in case power goes out. I'm just so used to batteries and the APP for all my previous told me when batteries were low. We'll see how I feel after I have the week to get used to them.

Heat index unbearable here all last week and the coming week as well. I see people who need to work outside and I don't know how they do it.

I went to check out the pool late yesterday and the water felt like taking a bath. Uh, no!

Have a great weekend, enjoy your grandson and keep cool.

Re: *****SHABBAT SHALOM JULY 25TH******

@Q-Checker   I appreciate your info about HA's. We have 2 huge universities here and I went to the one here years ago to get tested and get HA's replaced for new ones. The technology changes and improves so often. They did assign me to a graduate student and I immediately knew this wouldn't work. She didn't know beans about my needs. I've been with a private audiology clinic with great credentials ever since. She does calibrate the HA's on her computer and her staff emails or texts me every 3-4 months to come in for new wires and to have them cleaned them, etc.

Stay cool.
