In our mind, we no longer "structure" because we don't work outside the home.
My calendars, now consist of doctor appt's, (any kind of doc.) or invitations. That's our reward of retirement after all the years of working we did.

I have three little dogs so they structure it. Going for a walk, feeding, out again etc. etc. Other than that I clean, iron, etc. when I want to. I miss the social part of a job and the feeling of needing to be somewhere. Maybe if I had a husband who was physically able to do stuff it would be better. Going out to eat is about all we do other than doctors and grocery store. It is so stinking hot in Florida that you are inside about 6 months a year and really nothing to do unless you like the beach. I am bored out of my mind and have hated retirement. Actually the dogs are what keep me going.

@house_cat wrote:I'm retiring in a few days and although that's clearly a blessing, I have to admit I'm concerned. I'm the kind of person who needs structure and routine. Sometimes, even just a long weekend can throw me for a loop.
I'm wondering how other retirees structure their days. Do you have a daily routine, or just go with the flow? If you're comfortable sharing, I'd love to know how you organize your time.
Thank you.
It took me the block to walk from the building to the parking ramp to adjust to retirement. I love it.
I don't structure most days. I've always been Type A but learned how to chill and let go of it. I wish I'd figured this our decades ago.
I don't set alarm clocks unless I have an early morning appointment. I do what I want when I want.
My social life was better after retirement than ever before. I really missed it during covid but it's starting to pick up now. Everyone I'm around has been fully vaccinated.
I take care of my 90 yr old dad and disabled sister. They live close by so I'm there almost every day to chat, check in, or help with whatever they want.
I walk with a friend and our dogs 3-4 mornings a week. We have a gorgeous cemetery nearby and walk for about an hour.
I do some charity work.
Working in the yard is like therapy for me. I love it.
There are a few tv shows I like.
I've de-cluttered like crazy.
I love to sit on the deck and read while my dog plays in the yard.
I've painted several rooms.
I'm busier now than when I was still working but it's stuff I love, not because I have to, so it's an adventure and very enjoyable.
You'll find your niche. it may take a little while but find things you're interested in. You might find you like some but not others. That's ok.

Next month will mark the 11th anniversary of my retirement. Over the years I've found that I fell into a very easy routine that can pretty much be summed up as "go with the flow". I usually get up and have breakfast while catching up on the news and my emails, doing the daily crossword puzzle and seeing what's going on in this blog. Later, I may do a few things around the house, work in the garden, go swimming or get together with friends. It really just depends on what I feel like doing. Lately, DH and I have made a point of going to the gym 3 times a week. And I usually cook dinner each night. That's pretty much it. When I was working, my colleagues considered me to be a Type A personality and predicted I'd only last a month or so before going back to work. Fooled them! 😉
My advice is to just relax and get used to having time to yourself. See where life takes you at this point in your life and don't worry about what others think you should be doing. Enjoy!

I also worry about what I will do all day when I retire. I like to keep busy and get lots done the more I got going on. I like that push. I do not want to sit and read or watch tv all day. Not for me. Summer I will be fine but winter might be boring. I get bored easily.
I have some things planned and the part I will enjoy is doing what I want when I want but definitely need more to come up with. I have friends retiring also so hoping we can get together more.
I know it will take some getting use to but I don't want to work forever either. I am starting to think about it more and more. I plan on next year first part of summer.
Everyone says you will be fine you always find things to do. I guess that is true.

@house_cat Just wait until that baby gets here and she will re-structure everyone's life for you!
Relax and enjoy your retirement and new home, Nana!

In my working youth all my days were structured, working, cooking, housekeeping as a single mom with 2 kids. I detest structure now and get a case of the "grumpies" if for some reason I need to plan a day.

Any work you have to do, complete by noon. Otherwise, you can do it tomorrow. Or the next day. Or the next. LOL.
