I am not into the gray trend that's been going on now for awhile. Even my Hair salon during shut down painted everything gray LOL! For some reason gray depresses me....and here in the midwest we have very LONG dark days in the fall/winter season...so gray is outside with almost zero sun most days. I couldn't handle it inside my home also.
We just painted a small upstairs bedroom in a super light mint green....with white trim (it's not true white there is some odd tint in it from the builder 15yrs ago). It is so beautiful when I walk in that room...my oldest son was over and saw it and loves it. Wants to paint his bedroom (lives in apt) same color. The adjoining (jack/jill bathroom) will stay the light sand color with same trim and the other bedroom will be painted this same mint green color but this room has a vaulted ceiling so I am thinking of making it a lighter color to change it up some. It will look so pretty up there and "happy"!
The 3rd bedroom upstairs my husband picked the color...it is a ultra light blue ceiling with slightly darker blue walls. Just began tapping the molding off today...hope we can get it done this weekend. Again I am leaving the closet/bathroom in the sand color with same trim to accent these rooms.
Our home was painted with this oatmeal/sand color entirely with the white(undertone "grayish") trim. That was the only thing they would do back then....one color entire house.
I need to get a professional in here for the lower floor....we have super high massive ceilings in family room....plus our MB & bathroom with vaulted ceilings. 15yrs and all we painted was the kitchen....and some of the lower hallway areas.
And the carpet OMGoodness....our sons have moved out...it ALL needs to go!! Paint 1st then carpet....maybe by next yr we can do all this. I am going with a lighter carpet in family room...we have a olive green with sclupted fleur -de- lis in it...beautiful at the time but so out of date now.

for me personally, I would have a different colour for the carpet. Grey can be very bland, unless the lighting is excellent. Depending on their like/dislike of colours generally, there are a lot of options to go with grey. Blue, pink, yellow, would all look great.

You're a good friend to give support. I agree that it's so important to take the time to get it right (I've rushed a room in the past out of losing patience, I'm living with that regret, lol)!

All the walls were several shades of gray, the floors were the gray, driftwood vinyl plank flooring. The were some seating areas in flat, commercial carpeting the same color and texture as the vinyl except with a dark blue stripe.
The whole place had the ambience of a federal prison. Next year, I'm taking a can of red paint with me.

I know this is a little late but I'll put in my two cents worth anyway. Every house I have ever lived in I was always complimented on for the way I decorated them. There was one house that I called in a decorator for and after a week of seeing her suggestions and colors I decided to do it myself.
Anyway, getting back to the grey walls. The last house I had I painted the walls a very light grey and the carpeting was also a gray but darker than the walls. My furniture and accessories is where the color came in. One thing I always remembered was from a decorating class I went to and that is to always have something in black in the room because it anchors the room, and it works, try it.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions/replies.
My friend and I went shopping last week and picked out three different colors of carpet, we took the samples to the house along with a painted swatch of the wall color....which in the end was not so much grey but more creamish....the carpet samples had a fleck of light grey, blue grey and cream and looked really nice with the wall color.
Two of the bedrooms are a different color than the living area and the same carpet had that fleck of color...we chose pretty close colors to what we needed!!
I think it will look really nice once the paint is on the wall and the carpet it down...it's a big job picking out carpet for an entire house.
I was there for moral support and a little bit of guiding to the right color family but she had the final say...I did not want that decision on my shoulders, ha!

@Mom2Dogs I have wall to wall carpet. Carpet is visually warmer, and it's worth scrubbing for that warmth (for me).
No way do I want to refinish floors.
What a nightmare!
We're in the woods with porches and need light floors to keep the house from being too dark.
