I taught Interior Design. A neutral floor in such a large area won't overwhelm. I would do a gray white.

I had my annual eye exam today. My doctor has moved to a large new clinic building. All the walls were several shades of gray, the floors were the gray, driftwood vinyl plank flooring. The were some seating areas in flat, commercial carpeting the same color and texture as the vinyl except with a dark blue stripe.
The whole place had the ambience of a federal prison. Next year, I'm taking a can of red paint with me.

The best advice I can give is to decorate your home in colors you enjoy wearing. That will match your style and make you feel comfortable in your surroundings.
We did hardwood floors except off white carpet in master bedroom/closet area on 1st floor and on the 2nd floor just for noise control. We're getting ready to do hardwoods in MB for resale.
I did my walls and trim in a true, neutral white with no undertones...Behr Polar Bear. My art work and area rugs and throw pillows pop against neutral furniture pieces...just like the accessories I wear on my neutral outfits.

We matched our carpet to the hair of our previous dog; thankfully, it's pretty much the same as our current Golden.:-)

I think a lot depends on where it is going. We selected a very neutral/wall color carpet for our family area. We have high ceilings and wanted the carpet to soften that area and pull it together. It is open to the kitchen, a small dining area and a large hallway, which are all wood.
We picked something light and neutral, with a very slight pattern to look more casual. It is low pile and a very good carpet for a high traffic area. So we have been very happy with that choice.
All of our bedrooms are neutral, but if you are someone who likes color, to me that's the place to do it! Just be sure you don't see a lot of rooms of different colors standing in one place. It looks like an Easter basket then.

Hello.........I believe that some of the major paint companies have options that figure out which colors go with which.
That, or just type into Web search 'Best color combinations and carpeting that go with light grey walls'............
I'm guessing that there are decorating websites that will give photo suggestions.

@Mom2Dogs We live in Michigan and without carpeting our floors are still warm. I think that is a myth about floors being cold w/o carpeting.

When we moved into this house, it really needed painting.... everywhere. I chose 4 shades of taupe and everything was painted, even inside all closets) some rooms with an accent wall of the darker taupe. We love it.... enough warmth in the color to keep me happy. I worked at Naval facilities for such a long time that I am NOT partial to gray whatsoever.... LOL!! ![]()

@Group 5 minus 1 Our house is on a slab, the tile floor in the kitchen is freezing in the winter. I should check the dining room in the winter, the floors in that room are wood.
