I agree those are more important things to protect children from but, again, they're not mutually exclusive.  I don't have to CHOOSE to protect kids from one OR another, do I? I think bringing up well-mannered children is a responsibility we should take seriously too and I consider the use of foul language (at least in front of others) to be bad manners.

And you can certainly ask your grandchildren not to swear. Being around people who swear doesn't force others into doing so. They're not being exposed to anything actually harmful. You're making it sound as if they are. Hearing people swear causes no harm. If you don't want them to have bad manners, you don't need to be worried about what they're exposed to, you need to talk to them about their own behavior.

I grew up with friends who drank and did drugs. I rarely drink and didn't until after I was 21. I've never used illegal drugs. What I was exposed to didn't matter, my own strength and ability to say No is what mattered. Teach your grandchildren to worry about themselves and their own behavior, not about what everyone else is doing.

ITA!  I was around a lot of people who used drugs when I was in college, not just students but including professors, MDs and older psychiatrists.  I never took it up.

My daughter is also around a lot of different people and she never got into drugs.  I tell her all the time how happy that has made me.  I never had to worry about her.

Oddly enough, she also doesn't swear, I do.  I keep it clean, though.  I don't get crude, ever.

Well if you want to  hear limited vocabulary...DH and I started watching DEADWOOD....ahem...they use the same 15 words through every episode...and they are mostly swear or degrading to women words...those were the times...Not condoning here...just saying the writers don't have it very hard in that series...

Anyway..I'll admit it I swear..not around people that don't ...Try not to around friends grandkids...but I'm a crazy Italian and sometimes I just get out of hand...I'm old too...gonna be starting medicare next month..lol...

Please don't judge me or anyone else that gets emotional...we really don't mean anything by it...DW

@Texasmouse, I never said anyone couldn't!!!  In my experience I have noticed how MANY holier than thou people who would NEVER use a word stronger than dang were so rude and nasty (particularly when talking about others) to others in life - never stated it was everyone who was like this!!   Also, I have  not encountered many who pepper their speech with many profanities who are not the kindest, nicest people who while they may sound rough would  not treat others unkindly in actions or with words.

I don't necessarily agree with the "it's just words" depending on what words you are using and how they are directed.

Words are hurtful and they cut deep.  I am shocked at the amount of times I hear a fight between a boyfriend and girlfriend, or husband and wife, and they are cussing each other out and calling each other names.  That is so disrespectful and I can guarantee if my DH ever called me even so much as the "B" word let alone some of the other things I hear, we would not be married.

Some of the conversations I hear make people sound trashy.  Yes I swear and yes I drop the "f" bomb but I don't direct it at people, it doesn't happen at work and it doesn't happen out in public places.

When people are around those who swear constantly, I think they tend to start picking it up.  Hearing small children swear is disgusting to me.  Hearing parents swear around their small children is disgusting to me.  I remember my neighbor's 3 year old was going up the street using the "f" word and she thought it was so cute.

If only I lived close enough to have an influence on them.  Unfortunately, they live thousands of miles away. Smiley Sad

Then I guess you'll have to trust your children to parent their own children and hope that you passed your own values onto them.

I hate hearing the f-bomb under any circumstance.

Just for the sake of interest, one reason people swear is to alleviate pain, and it works.  There have been several studies on it.  For anyone interested, here's a report from the esteemed Scientific American:

LOL!

Months ago, I smashed my finger and broke it while decorating the mantel.  The top part bent 90 degrees.  Man, did I ever swear then, on and on, it hurt!  My daughter came running in, took one look and almost fainted.  It's still wonky Woman LOL
