The tempermant is in the animal...all the other dogs they owned (other breeds responded to us as most dogs do...a few barks then walked away.......) the ONE pitpull growled, barks and tried frantically to get through the fence to get at my husband or myself.............he was the ONLY dog to try to charge at the woman across the street...the others stayed in the yard.....................A gentlemen across the way rescued a pitbull mix .....had the dog for 3 yrs.....when he walked the dog the dog growled at some people while on his
leash....and we heard from the gentlemen "oh he is a good dog...rescue dog".............three years later that good dog attacked his wife.....she wasn't too badly hurt but they did get rid of the dog.........and the reason you hear about a breed being discriminated against is because those are the dogs who are doing the damage to other small animals, children and adults as well.......not that another breed hasn't had a share of bites .....but the pitbull and similar types are certainly in a different catagory. I too believe that a dogs behavior is the responsiblity of the owner.......but not in these cases....the other dogs were well behaved......and the gentlemen went on and on how the dog was soooo good........until.

There are SO many - watch the court shows and 90% of the time, the VICIOUS attacks on other dogs are from Pitbulls. This breed is a MENACE. Why anyone would own one is beyond me. They're very dangerous.
Because we all know everything on tv is true.......reality shows are not scripted to create drama.
There is plenty of attacks not on TV shows......it isn't a dramatazation...........its real life......

News reports I have found do not identify the breed.

What a beautiful dog is your Levi. Thank you for sharing your story about him and your family. I believe there are many more stories similar to yours when it comes to pit bulls. Many draw conclusions about this breed because most media only report the bad things about the breed because it is what sells.
I hope you and Levi have many more happy and loved filled years with each other.

@occasionalrain You make some good points.
I would never buy into a subdivision without knowing what I was getting into re: neighbors and roaming dogs, etc. The neighborhood dynamic.
However, it's a bit late for the op now as she has already bought in.
I hope she gets a satisfactory resolution. This sort of thing is why I don't like living around neighbors...I like living in the country.
BTW, there is a man in Detroit on trial right now for second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and possessing dangerous animals causing death, because his pit bulls killed a four-year-old boy.

People think they can keep these vicious dogs without repercussions, the tide is turning and I'm glad.

Absolutely true. Any breed. For the safety of both the dog and any people the pup may get aggressive with.

@occasionalrain wrote:You move into an established neighborhood where the neighbors accept this dog and his roaming. No one, including the neighborhood children, seem to fear him. So, instead of accepting what has been established and, if you don't want the dog in your yard, put up a fence you set about making enemies of your neighbors.
The problem isn't the dog.
Are you saying because "it has been established ", a person should accept a dog roaming because children to not fear him? So the new neighbor should conform/accept or spend money for a fence they not want, thus their are making enemies with the neighbors?
Either am missing your point, or it is your view, that someone possibly breaking the law by allowing their pet to roam free, should be accepted by any and all new neighbors moving in, because "it has been established" by the neighbors"?
If so, I guess if any type of crime, since the neighbors established it is ok, should be accepted by the newbies moving into "their own established rules, and/or laws". Those neighbors would not me moving into their "established" law free zone.

Many years ago my niece was mauled and almost killed by a lab. This was a dog she'd played with half the day. The owners went inside and the dog became territorial. It was my brother's house so who knows what went through the dogs mind? It can happen with any dog. Pits get the 'locked jaw' reputation because they are hard wired to not let go.
Most my family have pits including said niece. They're lovers not fighters.
Personally I'd demand these people contain the dog irregardless of the breed. If the police won't help, I'd go to the newspaper next, and if that doesn't help, the place of employment of the dogs owner. Considering their chosen professions it's even worse for them to let the dog run free.
I live in a great neighborhood for dogs, we all have fences and if by chance one gets out the rest of the neigbors will put the dog back in the yard. I know the dogs names more than the neighbors. LOL
