Re: Phrases you can’t stand.

Im not sure what you mean? Are you saying the “g” is silent in hanger or length?

Re: Phrases you can’t stand.

In both the words 'hanger' and 'long' the 'g' is definitely pronounced.  We don't say 'haner' or 'lon.'  I have no idea whether or not many people ever learned proper grammar.

One of the expressions used as a selling point is to say that an item marked $89.99 is under $90.00.  While they are correct in the legal sense, they must think we are morons who do not know how to round up.  I also realize that the brain reads from left to right and retains information first seen.  As stated, they could never be sued because, technically, $89.99 is less than $90.00, but it just annoys me.  Telling me the item is less than $90.00 is not going to sway me to make the purchase.

Re: Phrases you can’t stand.

Originally, $89.99 is less than $90., but when one adds tax to that it's more than 90. So they need to add the disclaimer about taxes or shipping (if applicable.) They purposely leave that imformation out, thinking people won't notice. Everyone does know that and no one is fooled.

@Allthingsgirly67 @docsgirl "hanger" is not pronounced "haner" but the "g" is implied, rather than pronounced as a hard "g" sound. Think like the word "singer" (or do you also pronounce that with a hard "g"?)

Where it's at? Overuse of the word "at".

One phrase I dislike is "it was worth every penny!"

I picture someone sitting there, counting out pennies......

Re: Phrases you can’t stand.

Misuse of the word "stupid" as in....

"it's STUPID hot today"...or "It's STUPID expensive...!!"
