On The Light Side Ladies-A Southern Lady At A Funeral

This article is very light hearted and I hope it gives you a smile.

This is certainly not intended to be disrespectful to anyone as we have all lost those whom we greatly loved.

I adore the South, and don't find it offensive at all.  Just as you said, light-hearted and affectionately humorous...

I'm from the south, a lot of this sounds like things my momma has either said, or I know would be capable of, lol

When my best friend's husband died I took over the running of the home.  He was very well known in the town and in his profession.  Greeted each guest at the door, made sure friend got rest when she needed it, photographed each floral gift and attached to florist card for thank you notes later, made sure names of all visitors were noted, covered for family in screenning phone calls when needed, assured refreshments were properly there for visitors, meals and snacks were always ready for family, planned with friend menu for visits after funeral and made sure all was correctly there, made sure pets were cared for and safe with all the coming and going, sat with family recording wishes for funeral service and then implemented, all questions about how xxx would want such and such done were directed to me, arranged pick up of family and close friends from airport, proper suit, shirt, tie, shoes, and socks were sent to the funeral home; she and I laughed and cried about picking out which socks DH would want to be burried in, on and on, yep, the wife's best friend is large and in charge.

Not at all a position I usually assume,m or see myself in, but it is what one does here in the South, it is a tradition of support and love.

The one thing at funerals (not just in the South) that drives me crazy when I hear it is "doesn't he/she look natural."   Or "doesn't that look just like him/her?"   Hale no...not judging from the last time I saw him alive and breathing!

@Drythe

Everyone needs a best friend like you.   Aren't you in NC?   May I hire you in case I pass away before Handsome...he'll make a mess of things, bless his heart!

Thank you.

Yes, I'm in NC.  A true child of the South, although I've been blessed to see a big chunk of this 'ole world.  Are you here too?

@Drythe - You can handle my "stuff" too! Please, no "funeral" music - some rock 'n roll thank you very much (a couple of Jersey boy tunes thrown in for good measure too), and most of all, no tears - go out for lunch, have a drink or two and laugh the way we always did!!

@riley1

For my friend's DH we choose music from the Phantom of the Opera, some rock-in-roll, some jazz, and a bit of blues..

Thank goodness I hired 2 teenage boys to be runners for me!  One constantly circled the home inside and out for empty glasses, napkins, spills, trash baskets, garbage, dog walking, sweeping porch, spot vacuuming, and the other did driving errands.

We had a grand wake the night before, laughing, good stories, tears, remember whens, toasts.

I still miss him mightily!
