Do you launder newly purchased clothes before you wear them? 

I don't know anyone who does, but I've done it for years .. don't know why - maybe I had a bad experience.

Anyway, do you ...?

but I did wash the new sheets I bought before using they were very stiff

Yes. Clothes, bedding, towels etc.

It was common practice for my mother to do this when my brother and I were growing up. We were so allergic and brother had asthma. The doctor  advised her to never let us wear anything bought from the store without washing first due to dyes in the fabrics That was many years ago. . Now, I rarely do this for clothing.Other items such as sheets and towels  I do.

I launder everything before I wear it.  You never know where the garment has been, especially if it is coming from overseas.........I've read where people have actually had insects in their clothing and or blankets they had purchased.  I would not take a chance. JMO

Yes I do. Towels and linens too. No to outer sweaters and jackets.
