Re: November 2019 Bird's Nest - Giving Thanks

Hi Everyone,

I hope that everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving!  Sorry I did not get on here sooner but we hosted Thanksgiving and we started preparing what we could yesterday and I never got onto the PC until now.

We had a great day and everything came out good!  The weather was cold and very windy and they were predicting power outages but none happened that I know of.  I hope that everyone that was to have strong winds kept their power!

@Bird mama

Great idea for using the ice.  I hope that you did not need it but I too always like to have a plan 2 or a back-up.  We have an automatic generator that does the entire condo.  Years back we were without power in an ice storm for 10 days and thank goodness we had a small generator to get the bare necessities working but the roads were closed for several days and the gas stations pumps were not working due to no power so no gas for the generator.  The one we have works off of our propane tank so I am very paranoid about having enough propane in the tank.  We heat and cook using propane also.

@mousiegirl

Years back DH worked outside the home but we always did and do have a home office but I usually use it for both work and pleasure more than DH that is until he retired from field work and now also works from the home office.  I do the paperwork and he does the management end of it.  It took a long time to get used to not being the only human in the house but now it is great.  Give it some time and hopefully it will all be good for the both of you.

@possummink

I am so happy to hear that your brother made it home from the hospital.  I hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving.  I hope everything goes well for your brother especially the CPAP and the oxygen.

@geezerette, @hellie jo , @Winifred and others all had a great Thanksgiving!!!

Stay warm, safe and dry everyone!!!

@possummink

I don't know how I did it, but I missed your post about your brother getting home in time for Thanksgiving.  That's wonderful!  Even though I imagine he's going to be limited in his activities, it's a much better situation for both of you.  Hopefully he will recover more quickly now that he's home.

I hope you had a nice day yesterday.  You do indeed have much to be grateful for.  ❤️

@possummink

A local news story on our morning show made me think of you:

Seems a family had what appeared to be a stove fire (it wasn't mentioned in the story specifically) and called the fire department.  When the fire was extinguished, it was found to have started because of a possum nest inside, complete with a baby possum!  No injuries were reported, including the possum, which was released into the wild.  (Hopefully to live happily ever after!)  😄

Oh my but Conrad is such a handsome gentleman - that hat looks great on him. Also the Cardinals are beautiful.

Had snow yesterday and last night and the hills which surround me are gorgeous. But bottom line - IT IS SUPER COLD. Brrrrr. Kept waking up during the night also. Usually it is not the cold that does that it is a trip to another room. LOL.

Yesterday there was only Davey and I here to eat - what a surprise that was but he was great company.

Just got back from taking Gaye some Ice Tea over to her - she is in a nursing home and I think she is bored something fierce. For some months now she just sits in a recliner and does nothing but haul herself to the bathroom when needed . She should be at home with some help there - I truly believe she can handle it.

Nope, did not make any trips out to any stores today other than to get the tea for Gaye - am not a Black Friday shopper - never have been.

Hope all had a great day yesterday - December is almost here.

Cooper's Hawk in Flight

Hi Birding Friends,   I hope y'all had a really nice Thanksgiving.   Ours was extra nice since my brother was home and was able to go with me over to our younger brother's home for our Thanksgiving supper with our extended family.    I fixed Fordhook Lima beans with smoked bacon and oven fried sweet-potatoes.  I skipped the pies this year, too much other stuff going on and I was worn out.  Not a great excuse, but my sister in law had fixed pumpkin pie, apple pie, cherry cream cheese pie, possum cream plus about 4 jello-fruit molds.   She cooks a lot, always.  Love her cooking!!

It was cold and damp here today and I only ventured out to the post office to send my sister some apple butter and pick up stamps for my brother and mail some bills for him.  I didn't want him out dragging his O2 bottle with him as he's not strong enough for driving and getting in and out of that old truck of his.

The bird above, a Sharpshinned hawk, is like one that landed in the upright Yew near my bird feeders yesterday, about 10 feet from me.  I was standing near the bird food barrels and some birds flew into the flat trimmed Yew bush.  The hawk landed then and really startled me as I wasn't expecting it to be so bold.  I said something to it, not even sure what I said and it looked at me a bit and flew a short distance away.  I don't know where it landed as the flat trimmed Yew blocked my view of the drive.  I think the hawk flew into the woods past the 'critter condo', a big brush pile near the barn/shed.  Dozens of birds shelter there and I think the possums and ground hog do too.  We keep adding to it.

The Cooper's hawk is almost as brazen as the smaller Sharpshin and they must be visiting here often as my birds are scarce a lot of the day.

@Winifred ~~~~Winifred,  I'm glad Davey was there for your Thanksgiving supper.  I hope the snow and rains have put those awful fires out in CA.

I don't go to the stores on Black Friday, never have, but I do shop on line and earned a nice check from Rakuten aka Ebates.    I do most of my gift shopping on line or phone.  Didn't even go to the grocery store.  Will do that maybe tomorrow as there's a good deal on gift cards and I need to pick some of those up.

Keep warm and safe!! Heart
