Medicaid is only available for those who have no assets (less than $3,000 in total).
A social worker told me that.

@cotton4me In my state, Nusing Homes Medicaid patients works like this: Firstly, if you need to be put in a care facility it will be a nursing home. IF your home has NOT been willed to a child or someone within the last 7 years, they get your house claiming it offsets the cost of your care,as well as what's in your bank account. As far as your SScheck goes, residents in the past were given a whopping $30 a month to spend on what they wanted. So, a lot of kids are hesitant to put their parent into a nursing home because they don't want to lose their future inheritance.

I know you have to "spend down" to qualify for it.
I don't know a lot about it. I know the facility applied for Medicaid on her behalf. I just found this online.
"Because Medicaid is administered by individual states, the benefits covered under assisted living waivers can vary. It’s important to find out what kinds of Medicaid waivers your state offers and what they cover. The Medicaid.gov website lists Medicaid programs by state."
Medicaid does cover it. You don’t have the luxury some have. It is usually a shared space. Two people with a small common area, bathroom and two bedrooms.

@manny2 Exactly! Here, it's one room, two beds, with 2 patients and a shared bathroom. No phone, unless your family pays to have you one put in. There is a payphone in the hallway.

First, you are not your neighbors keeper! However, if you like her and want to help her, are you interested in a roommate?

@Ronettes I think that's Cash in a bank account. I know they are allowed to own a home and car.
Apparently only in CA and NY

No, they can’t own a home unless they have a spouse. They have to pay private pay first. Exhaust the funds and then they become eligible for Medicaid.
Medicaid does a 5 year look back. If any of the assets were transferred to the family, they will get a penalty. If you give your family cash, they will also penalize you.

I have seen this play out in my family. The kids just can't admit that the time has come and living alone isn't an option.
Can you imagine how hard it is to get someone lost behind TSA? Got put on a nonstop (or not) and landed (or not) but ....
I would think the thing to do is to put it back on the kids. When she asks for a ride for an errand, just relay the message.
