Order a double layer quarter sheet cake, that will take care of everybody!
If you like a certain filling, that goes well.
For the summer, I would do a yellow cake with a raspberry or strawberry fruit filled cake.
It's a birthday party, dessert is a birthday cake. No need to do anymore. Happy Birthday to your hubby and I hope he likes surprises.
Don't forget the balloons, great balloons at the Dollar Tree or any Dollar Store in your area.
Years ago I planned a retirement party for my boss and needed cake to feed the entire company (est 200 +) instead of ordering several full sheet cakes, I actually ordered a triple layer full sheet cake, cut in slices, it fed the entire company and enough for him to take home for his family. In your case, a double layer quarter sheet would be perfect. Just a thought

What a nice thing to do for your DH's 75th birthday. I would go all out with a custom cake from a local baker. It could be your "centerpiece". Last year when DH turned 60, his cake was a "Holland America" ship. It was a hit with our guests and still talked about.

I'm planning a 75th birthday party for dear hubby. There will be about 23 adults and 3 children in attendance. My question is regarding the cake. A quarter sheet cake feeds about 20 people a half sheet cake feeds about 40 people. One is too small and the other is too big. I was thinking maybe supplementing the cake with another dessert. Let's hear your suggestions.
@seaswirl I would do a cupcake tower...you can do it yourself stacking Dollar Store glass cake stands.

Hard to believe, I know. But there are non-cake eaters in this world.

A lot of people are suggesting cupcakes, have you priced one of those
from a bakery?
$2-$4 a piece.....................crazy.

Thank you all for your good suggestions. I ended up getting the 1/2 sheet cake with filling. I didn't want to take a chance of running out, and my grandchildren will love to take home the leftovers!
Next quandary.... the party is tonight, so I need your quick responses.
I made up a 6 minute slide/video presentation. I am going to project it on a screen. When, during the party, would be the best time to say a few words, i.e. about my husband and cute facts about the year he was born, and start the video?
