NEW YEAR'S TRADITION

[ Edited ]

At the very end of each year, I release a balloon for each family member or friend I lost during that year. Somehow it helps me with healing and closure.

Do you have a special tradition?

On New Year's Day I burn a bayberry candle from start to finish.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

@Shanus That's beautiful.

I have no special NY tradition like that.

But this reminds me of graveside service for my mom in 2020, (during Covid lockdown when we had to do simple svcs, so it was done in our own personal way..) I, last minute grabbed an old bottle of children's "bubbles" I had from something (no idea what possessed me to do so that day)... and through our tears we laughed as I sent up bubbles to mom as I imagined her spirit flying free.

Since then I've done that on my back porch, at times when I want to connect with the heavens above and loved ones...sent bubbles up to her and others...

It's a sweet tradition you have.🤍 Happy, healthy New Year.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but not too long ago here there were posts mentioning how bad balloons are for the wildlife/environment. Certainly there are other options to remember loved ones and gain closure.

The first man in your home should be dark haired and carry in a lump of coal and pieces of money (a coin). It is an Irish superstition.

That thing about the bayberry candle, it's supposed to be Christmas Eve.

I agree that it is a bad practice.  If that was my "ritual", I would find a safer one for wildlife.

@Shanus  - What are your thoughts on finding a safer way to remember love ones instead of balloons?

@Shanus As always, thank you for starting this thread.  A balloon release, blowing bubbles, burning the bayberry candle, prayers - all remembrances or traditions that are personal to each.

Thank you to everyone for sharing and opening yourselves up to others that don't agree .. .I am hopeful each of you continue to carry your tradition/remembrance forward.

Happy New Year
