Re: My son and his fiancé

[ Edited ]

@dex

Congratulations!!!

I particularly like/ appreciate your wisdom and understanding in not pushing your will into your children’s plans for their new beginnings.

My DH and I had a romantic “away” wedding without all the stress and family issues we KNEW would have come up. It would have been AWFUL for both of us.

I have always been very appreciative that except for gently voicing their regrets at not being there, only ONE time, our parents respected and supported our wishes.

In fact mine gave us the $ they would have spent on our wedding, and my in-laws up graded all our flights to first class.

***** Just adding, the ‘marriage “took” just fine, and we have been blessed with many good years.

Congratulation!!   I think it is wonderful they are doing their own thing for the wedding and they are blessed you are supportive.  I would love it since I hate weddings with a passion.

@Drythe I especially loved reading your reply as you speak from experience.I had a little nagging worry that they would be lonely saying I do and cutting the cake alone but I see that you had s happy and positive experience. They said they just wanted a stress free wedding and that the price to put on a wedding for family and friends was unaffordable...who to invite and worse who not to invite when funds are limiting.

Thanks for your response.

We stayed at a lovely old hotel and took photos, rode bikes, drank Planters Punch, swam, walked around, and met some wonderful people.

We were married in the lobby of the hotel, and friends we made took photos for us with DH's camera.  We sent a telegram to our folks so they knew the deed was indeed done!

We went to an outdoor dance club after our 4:30PM wedding, and jazz danced till late in the evening.

It was lovely, and a wonderful memory.

Wishing Love, Luck, and Happiness to your Son and New Daughter!

Niece wedding coming up in early June. My sister/BIL gave them a certain amount of money and anything over that is their responsibility.  My niece has already gone over that budgeted amount but luckily she and her fiance both have very good jobs and can afford it.  Having said that - I told my sister if I'd have been them I'd take the money offered toward the wedding and put toward a house or savings.

One of the all time best gifts my son ever gave me was my daughter-in-law.  Blessings to you and your family @dex.  I have so loved being a Mom-in-law.

Congratulations!

I think what would bother me the most, is getting texted.  Not sure how close you are, logistically, but in person would've been great.

I would hope my sons (or daughter) would at the very least call me and tell me the news.  Announcing a commitment to marriage is huge.  You're gaining a new *daughter*.  Have you spoken to her since you found out?

The Bahamas is a very nice destination for the honeymoon.

@Lucky Charm@Yes we have spoken. The young people do things so much differently these days but we are very close. They have saved a week of their vacation to spend with us this summer and we will celebrate then.I am a little sad that they will be alone on their wedding day but that is their choice and it really is the beginning of their life together.

My son and DIL did the same thing last year.  They were married on Kauai, just the two of them, with a dinner after the ceremony.  They did not have a cake at the ceremony.  They had a dinner for family and friends at an exclusive restaurant a few weeks after their return.  I ordered a gorgeous wedding cake as a surprise for them.  I had the cake, beautiful cake knife and crystal toasting champagne glasses for them.  We had a champagne toast for them as they cut the cake.  It was a nice surprise and afforded them the cake cutting and champagne toast pictures as well.
