Makes you wonder if the neighbor has done this before in other situations.
Unless you live in "Mr Roger's Neighborhood" where everything is perfect, actions have consequences and a person needs to be held accountable.

wow....i never knew that.....
That's because it isn't true. Police have to respond to every call...that is their job.
They will respond to emergency calls first, so they might not be there within a few minutes, but they will show up.
No police do not respond to every call, depend where you live. In many places when involved in an accident, if there are no injuries, you are told to come to the station to file a report.
The police will not always show up if there is an unreportable accident. If the Parties involved are not hurt, did not damage anyone's property but their own cars and can drive their cars from the scene, they are expected to exchange info and leave. There is no reason to involve the police or even get a police report.
If there are injuries, or the cars must be towed, or property damage is done....like hitting a stop sign or someon's fence, or a hit and run, the police need to get involved and they will absolutely show up.
So then you agree, police do not respond to EVERY call.
No, I do not agree. Once you call 911, the dispatcher notifies the police or other emergency responder. They must respond to EVERY call and do a written report on the call. If it is just a small bump accident that is not reportable, the police will call you and get info on the phone. If at that time, it is not reportable, they will tell you and advise you if it is not necessary for them to show up and explain what you should do. Often, they show up anyway.
They cannot just not show up if 911 is called.
My DH was a full time police officer for 35 years and a part time one once he retired for another 10 years and my oldest son is a police officer as well.
I got to hear about some crazy calls they responded to....they have changed light bulbs and once my DH had a lady report that her bath tub wouldn't drain. He pulled the plug for Her and all was okay.
Every 911 call dispatched, must have a written report done and turned it at the end of each shift...even for dumb calls.
The police have laptops in their cars now and can do reports at the scene. Every call must be accounted for.
Taking information on the phone or telling you to come to the station to file a report is not showing up.
I have never heard of any police officer telling you to come into the office to file a report. Most of the times in my experience, there are no police officers in the office. You would have to make prior arrangements for them to meet you there.
Most police office's close at 5 pm when the receptionist goes home. Officers are only there during shift changes.
Do you always have to have the last word? And, You seem to be an authority about everything all of the time.
I've never heard of a police station closing at 5. Considering all the family court cases that require that people have to exchange their childing in police station parking lots (because the adults can't behave exchanging anywhere else), there's no way working people can get to a police station by 5 pm.
My little town of 10 square miles and 40,000 people has a 24/7/365 police station that you can walk in at any time of the day or night. I have personally gone in to bring found wallets and cell phones that were found on HOA property when I was the HOA president of my community. You walk in, you talk through a speaker behind gates and glass to give detailed information about who you are and why you are there and then an officer comes out to take the item and a report.
I don't have to make an appointment and they don't close at 5.

I talked with my neighbor. There is a language issue, but we got through it. She is the one who hit my car, but she knocked on my door and I'm in the back of the house and never heard it.
Her and her Mom escaped from Iran. She is very sorry this all happened and we hugged and I'm not prosecuting. She meant no harm. God love them for escaping to America. Iran is right next to Armenia, where my family escaped. No wonder I felt like family to them... life is good. The car will get fixed, but as an American, I am so glad they are safe here. Blessings

You are a kind, compassionate lady.

Are you serious??? Talk about being judgmental and making accusations. Do you often refer to people as, "scumbags"??? WOW!
I am quite sure that they have insurance. What makes you think that they don't???
You are insinuating that the person who hit the car has a police record??? WHAT A STRETCH! You certainly gave an imagination!
They likely didn't say anything simply because they figured that they could away with this and wouldn't have to pay for the damage. Yes, it is wrong on so many levels but, it certainly doesn't mean that they are criminals for god's sake!
They could have also hit the car just minutes before the owner came out WHO KNOWS!

So...do I have this straight? This whole long thread, with all the comments about the neighbor, the advice about what to do (re: police, prosecuting, etc.) is over a misunderstanding? SMH

I wouldn't call someone hitting your car and had until 2pm to notify @Mustang Shar and didn't. Even if @Mustang Shar was in the back of the house, keep ringing the bell or pounding on the door until you get an answer.
Glad everything is working out.

Well, you are the one that has to live next to them. If it were me I would be very upset. Trying to hide the fact that they damaged my car and trying to get away with it. Language barrier,...nah. Doing what is right transcends language. Just trying once to knock on the door?? This falls under the category of rewarding Bad behavior. Which you should not do. imo. But like I said you are the one living next to them. Hopefully, something else doesn't happen that they now think they can get away with.

I'm rethinking... I think I may have to go to court. She was very wrong. Terrible thing she did.
no, whoever thinks this thread was about a misunderstanding.... no it's about a neighbor who smashed up my car and couldn't be bothered to leave a note or knock on the door! She lives across the hall-10 feet away

@Carmie @CrazyDaisy I live in a big city and our police stations are open 24/7. You can go in at any time of the day or night. Police here do not respond to fender benders, etc where no one is hurt. You are told to exchange information with the other driver if you can and come to the police station to file a report.
