Re: My NEW Kitchen Pet PEEVE

[ Edited ]

I use dressmaking shears for almost EVERYTHING in the kitchen.    If that doesn't work, I use a Sabatier knife.

May include: A stainless steel carving knife with a dark brown wooden handle. The blade is long and slender, with a sharp point. The handle is attached with a metal bolster and secured with three silver rivets. The word 'SARADES' is etched on the blade.

Lately, online I see so many people, (generally young people) presenting recipes and using 'scissors'to cut their raw meats or large veggies instead of using a good knife.   I can  understand using a scissors if you're snipping fresh chives or herbs but big chunks of meat, like large smoked sausages/kielbasa or raw chicken breasts?

What ever happened to learning 'knife skills' in the kitchen?

I mostly use knives.  I have a nice set.  I also use a food processor...a lot.

I use scissors to cut open packages and to cut fat from chicken thighs.

Mine is over 50 years old.    I once used it to hack down a really big cactus...when I couldn't find a garden tool that would handle the job (!!!)   di

Re: My NEW Kitchen Pet PEEVE

I have kitchen shears that are made for cutting meat, and can cut thru bone. They have separate and come apart for easy washing or dish washer. I don't cut veggies with.  I am too picky about even sizes lol except herbs sometimes. But I still like mincin grhise with a good knife

Re: My NEW Kitchen Pet PEEVE

I have a bunch of different pairs of kitchen shears and scissors.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who uses them for cutting meat. I have severe arthritis in my hands and often cut myself when cutting things with knives, and struggle to hold them properly. The shears are so much easier and safer for me to use.

Let's see...I have poultry shears...pastry shears...pizza scissors (an old $1 pair of scissors that isn't good for anything else)...and a couple pair of Fiskars I use for snipping chives and parsley or cutting open food packages.

@ciao_bella   I have kitchen scissors that I use for cutting anything EXCEPT raw meat! I prefer a knife for that.

Everyone knows to leave my kitchen scissors alone! Once years ago I found them lying outside in the grass where DH was using them for something. I wasn't happy. Now he leaves them alone!  Smiley Wink

Well, I LOVE my kitchen shears/scissors. I use both. I even use them to cut our quesadilla's and sandwiches for the kids. In fact, a family member saw me use the scissors and she was wowed and now she does the same to cut her kids sandwiches. So much easier than a knife. One reason is you don't need to pull out a cutting board. I just hold it in my hand and cut away.

I also use them for herbs. Thinking about it, I use them for just about everything.

I have 5 different kitchen shears/scissors since I use them all the time. I put them in the dishwasher and they are good to go for the next job.

@cjm61 I too use my shears when cutting quesadillas. It is so easy. I cut them up right from my quesadilla maker. Actually, there are so many things I use them for in the kitchen over a knife.
