"It is very exhausting"
After I moved 5 yrs ago, my body reminded me for months I was no longer 25 yrs old. I should have done what my mother did when she moved.......hire a moving company that does everything. All my mother did was give the movers instructions on what to pack. They did everything else. And, I mean everything. They even unpacked at the new place & put everything where my mother wanted all in just a few hours.
By the time I got to the new place w/the stuff I packed in my car, my mother's new place looked as if she had been living there for years!
My mother did all of the above from the comfort of her lounge chair which was the last thing the movers packed.
If I ever move again--heaven forbid!!!--I will do exactly what your mother did. Smart woman!!

I've moved twice locally and three times 1,000 miles. Pack what you'll need for the first couple days in your car, along with any valuables/sentimental items. I.e. Kitchen things, toiletries, towels, clothes, sheets. Then you won't feel stressed if you don't make a lot of unpacking progress on day one.

Great tips on your move. The only thing I would add is make your bed up with clean sheets first. This way when you are exhausted from all of the work of moving, you have a place to crash!
(If someone mentioned this already in this post, I'm sorry I missed reading this).
Best wishes for a flawless transition@OhioAngel!

Now is the time to start eliminating things you don't want to take with you. Donate, sell, give to other family members. If you can, mark each box with as much of the contents as you can. When we had professional movers pack our stuff, they marked almost every box "misc". It was the only word they could write. Grrrr. Now I always write exactly what is inside as best I can so I know what to open first. Good luck and enjoy your new home! How exciting for you!

We will have our furniture and boxes coming in a couple of weeks so I was very interested in your move IN suggestions. I loved the one about taking extension cords and surge protectors over first so you don't have to move furniture to plug them in later.
DH just walked in and I told him your great idea. He smiled and said that is a good idea but all of ours are packed in the stuff coming.
DUH.

Oh, bummer! But I admit, @Bridgegal, I bought a few new surge protectors for the new place. Some of the old ones were packed and some were still in use at the old place, like the ones for the TV and computer, which got packed up last.
But because people keep creating more and more things that have GIANT AC adapter plugs, I never seem to have enough surge protectors. It used to be you could plug 4-6 things into a power strip and wouldn't need more. Now the strips hold fewer plugs due to size and I have 4 more things to be plugged in.

Label your boxes by area, not necessarily what the items are. Towels can possibly be in several different boxes, same for kitchenware. If you label "hall linen closet" you will know where the bath towels are, and "island kitchen drawers" will lead you to the dish towels. Don't bother with labels like "clothes," you will go nuts looking for stuff.

I've seen other people go through the moving experience (with professional movers) and it worked for them.
But there are things that I noted that wouldn't make me happy.
Upholstered furniture--sometimes they just pick it up and load it on the truck as is. Other times they throw filthy (horse?) blankets on the furniture (to protect it from....filth?).
Sometimes they wrap the furniture and loose cushions/pillows with a huge saran wrap type roll. Then they throw the dirty moving blankets on it. ugh.
For me, mattresses and upholstered furniture---I would have to protect these pieces before these movers get their hands on them.
Movers don't show up in white uniforms and/or wearing white gloves.
It's the ALL the heavy lifting and moving from point A to point B) that is the luxury. But I can't throw caution to the wind and NOT worry about my nice furniture getting soiled.
Our last whole house move was mid-June of this year. All brand new furniture/bedding/household necessities/contents. Therefore, I couldn't trust anyone but my family. Thankfully, it went perfectly and I am so grateful---and they know it!
Just something to keep in mind---it's the most important thing to me when moving.
That and no rain on moving day. I've seen tractor trailers of beautiful furniture and boxes/belongings getting unloaded during downpours. I think I'd have to call it off at any expense!

So excited and wondering if you all can give me some tips to make it a smooth transition!
I am just moving in my town, Not out of state.
I am feeling happy but also overwhelmed with all that will need done and things on my mind.
@OhioAngel Every time we’ve moved, I’ve packed a small suitcase (for each of us) w/ clothing, toiletries and personal items to last a week...like going on vacation. We had what we needed until everything was unpacked and put in place.
I always set up the kitchen first and then made up the beds. Surrounded by boxes, when we were too tired, at the end of the day to do anymore, we had what we needed in the suitcase to shower, put on pjs and climb into a clean, welcoming bed.
Best wishes. Relax as much as you can and enjoy the move...It’s an adventure. Good luck to you @OhioAngel.

@Newgate wrote:Luggage is a good place to pack breakables or for other things also! Shoe boxes are great for bathroom drawer items. Moving can be exciting. Good luck in your new home!
@Newgate I took dresser & chest drawers out and packed the entire filled drawer in bubble wrap and labeled them. Upon arrival, unwrapped and put drawers back in furniture w/o parking & unpacking items inside.
