  My husband claims that, when he did his laundry, he put 14 pairs of socks into the washer, and only wound up with 2 after drying.

  I have now heard about this 6 or 7 times and I'm just wondering if anyone HERE has the missing socks.

Socks is under the bed !    Sorry, I couldn't resist....lol    My sister has a black and white cat named Socks.  She lives in a small 2 bedroom apartment and Socks is an indoor cat but she manages to lose him a couple of times a month.  She calls in a panic because she can't find Socks and I always say......he's under the bed, he'll come out.  She has mobility issues and can't get down to look under the bed.  He always comes out for his dinner.

If I don't find the missing sock after a week or two, the mate gets thrown out, of course the next week I'll find it.

Some of them jump out of the hamper!

Yorkie, you could do what CelticCrafter does--throw out your mate!!! 
Then he'll lose socks somewhere else!

I never wear the same color socks.  I just put on whatever I find.  Usually they are totally different. 

When my girls were young they used to kid me about my different color socks (different designs).  Now that they're adult, 2 of them do the same thing.  One works like crazy to make sure they meet.  Ha!
