Winter can be quite cold here in the mountains.
Across from the foot of a mountain in a totally wooded lot adjoining a protected wet land, we have ducks in a small pond, hawks, owls, big critters (deer, bear), wild iris, Ladyslippers, and Jack in the Pulpit.
DH has a man cave in the basement garage.
During the winter we had several mice which were caught in a humane trap. DH put them in a terrarium an fed them so they wouldn't freeze to death.
One little fella, smaller than the other very small mice, had lost half of his tail and quite a lit of fur on his backside, apparently being beaten up upon by the larger mice!
DH put him in a separate terrarium "condo" and he started growing fur back.
Spring got warm enough, and they were carried down to the wetland to go on their merry way.
Stumpy, just a little larger than your thumb, however, has made the exceptionally long trek back back THREE times braving hawks that patrol the woods, black snakes, and owls and across a long driveway.
DH asked me what we were going to do about Stumpy.
I said "We can't throw out a brave mouse like that, you created a pet!"!!!
Stumpy has his first friend. They play together and happily run their hamster wheel.

@ECBG I love it. From a "foundling" in a terrarium to a household pet with a buddy -- how wonderful!

Thank you.

That's so awesome!
I love my little mousies. It is so wonderful that others out there will take care of them.
One favorite they love (I only have outside mousies) is peanuts. It's the cutest thing to see one tiny little mouse grab a peanut, that's about as big as s/he, and toodle off to eat it.

We used to have a squirrel (wild, not a pet) with half a tail that we called Stumpy.

@ECBG What a sweet feel good story! Stumpy risked life and limb to return to the home where love lives, thanks for sharing.
