Re: Litter boxes - how many?

I had one box in the Basement. One of my cats went outside, except for the Wintertime.  So basically one using the box regularly. She was fussy and if not cleaned she  went outside the box so put newspapers around it.

When I was in an apartment one year, the box was in the Utility Room for roommate's cat. After the last one which belonged to a stepdaughter died 20 years ago I have only had dogs.  Dogs and cats got along fine.

I had a co-worker, History Teacher, who had several cats and a litter box in the kitchen! Lived in a duplex. Yuk!

I personally won’t own a little robot. I haven’t heard of problems with the original and most expensive litter robot brand however, there are many generic brands out there that have been linked to cat injuries and death because they were trapped in the mechanism.

One cat. One box.

Re: Litter boxes - how many?

We've had multiple cats over the past 45 yrs., as few as one at a time, as many as four at once , but most common has been two together.  I never knew the rule of one box per cat.  I can't imagine doing that - the space required, the cost of the litter, the daily cleaning, regular changing, etc.  We've always only had one large litter box that they all shared.  It gets cleaned daily. 🤷‍♀️  When DH and I travel we set up extra boxes.  Everything gets dumped when we get back and we make a fresh one.

Aww, @Kitty Galore,  our sweet "elder cats" are all the more precious to us, aren't they!  Your Bailee lived a long, long life in his loving home...

How many cats do you have and how many litter boxes?  I had three cats at one time so  three litter boxes.  Then when one died and I had two cats I still had three litter boxes.  (My house is two floors.). Three plus years ago when one of my cats died I kept the three litter boxes.  Last cat died, got another still have three litter boxes lol.  He uses all three.  The funny thing is my stepson has three cats and only one - very large - litter box.

@FranandZoe

Interesting thread.

Years ago, I had a neighbor with one cat and he'd bring him over for a scheduled play date with my cat Bogey.

Since he'd be over for a few hours, I'd bring out the Guest Litter Box in case he needed to use it.   (Those flat temporary trays that Cats Pride makes).

A couple minutes into the visit, I'd pick up the kitty and place him in the litter box tray, just so he was clear it was his to use if he needed it.

I didn't want Bogey to ever have to share his litter box with a casual acquaintance.

Two kitties and three litter boxes, the box in the bathroom gets the majority of the use, I clean it daily.

I don't think I could have cats any more, if I had to do the litter box thing every day.  (Been there, done that.)

@Lucky Charm  Been a fan since LR was invented.  I am on gen 3 for my 1 cat.  Same cat for all 3 LR.

I have never used "litter boxes."  YUK!  I've always had "automatic" hooded kitty boxes.

I'm also lazy.  I even have "automatic" feeders.

One more than the number of cats. Right now I have one cat, so 2 boxes

@Mz iMac Same!  Do yours look like astronauts?  I love the automatic feeders.  Big thumbs up!

Re: Litter boxes - how many?

Vets and other kitty experts say one for each cat - plus one extra.

And they should be on each floor.
