Thank you Newgate for this information, although being in the medical field, nothing-ever- surprises me anymore. I'm somewhat speechless to express anything else, now, other than I loved his voice, along with what ONLY I 'knew' about him as a young girl. I do remember the plane crash/his death. I'll call our local PBS and inquire when this feature might be on. My husband will be as surprised as much as I am!

In fact, I have friends who studied (advance courses) at W.Va U. - their field in different credits relocated them to that particular university(medical) , so I'll brief them what you have told me.

That had to have been one very sad story. PBS always has the most informative worth watching viewing,,,,,,,always. Thank you. I am now trying to pull that up on a You Tube.

The PBS show did not go in to any of his marital issues. It was mainly about his music career and that he died in a plane crash in California!! Another poster wrote about his personal problems!

I agree -John Denver was so sweet and his music was beautiful. One of the posters mentioned "being Country music"?

...." I have very little to do with country music, for myself, but his music was more like a songbird singing such stirring emotional messages".... NOT country, maybe, folk songs on a more contemporary arrangement, though.

My husband is an avid researcher (hobby) for searching in the SCIENCE of the world that Jacque Cousteau loved. So, I do understand your substance that you have given as a tribute to John Denver, when he was at his best~~~

John Denver's death was such a loss. I have most of his albums and listen to his music on Pandora. I always feel his presence when in Aspen.

Oh my goodness...he had a major alcohol/anger problem. He reportedly assaulted/choked her AFTER the divorce..so you know there was some anger before the divorce. He went to rehab, had DUIs...it wasn't pretty. It was speculated he also had depression issues...to the point many think his plane crash was a suicide.

All that said, I still appreciate his music. 'Fly Away' with Olivia Newton John is my favorite. And 'Rocky Mountain High'...such an angelic voice...but there it ends.
Didn't know exactly what happened except that he was divorced and that his death was thought to be a suicide!! Thanks for filling us in a bit!

He's lucky TMZ wasn't around back then...they would've had a field day...especially with the DUIs. In fact, Wiki said the FAA suspended his pilot license in 1996 due to his alcohol abuse....a full year before his death. Technically he wasn't legally flying at his time of death.

Hindsight? Yes, his music will always be remembered positively...but thank goodness no one was harmed/killed due to his drunken antics. Just his reckless drunk behavior is almost enough for me NOT to remember him positively. No excuses for that.

Do you know _"if"_ John D. was a small plane pilot or did he ever have extensive training to be a commercial Captain?

If I remember correctly, he did love flying locally or around shortER distances. That I knew

Good question. I found this off Wiki...sounds like it was small aircraft only.

A pilot with over 2,700 hours of experience, Denver had pilot license ratings for single-engine land and sea, multi-engine land, glider, and instrument. He also held a type rating in his Learjet. He had recently purchased the Long-EZ aircraft and had taken a half-hour checkout flight with the aircraft the day before the accident.

I loved John Denver and his beautiful music.

John was very much a troubled, talented man.When he and Annie divorced, it was like a part of him died....

I saw him every summer in concert, I remember the first time I saw him after the divorce, he was a very sad, broken man, on stage that year.....

I also wonder about his death-he was an excellent pilot- and I find it hard to believe it was pilot error that made his plane go down..

I lived in Grand Junction, Co when John died. We had friends that knew him and Annie-they went to his memorial service in Aspen. They had his beloved dogs there and his favorite horse was lead in, riderless..

John truly loved his Rocky Mountains.......

I miss him and his music-it makes me sad to listen to it.

Who would have thought he was so angry; he outwardly appeared peaceful. My favorite song was Montana Skies sung with Emmie Lou Harris....I don't know why as I am from NJ and have never stepped foot in Montana

John's autobiography is a good read and addresses his high highs and low lows. It also talks about the incident with Annie post divorce. It's interesting that he let that cat out of the bag. It was never known as it was between just those two. Annie asked for the divorce on their 15th wedding anniversary. It destroyed him but he had been cheating on her for years. Karma came around to "bite him" as they say when he divorced Cassandra his second wife. She was cheating on him. He did write beautiful love songs for both of them. Annie's Song and For You. You can't beat that!!!
