Here in the deep South, they're tennis shoes, even if you've never played tennis in your life!

Sneakers or tennis shoes: What do you call them? - SBNation.com

Cincinnatian here and yep, they are and always have been gym shoes to me. I didn't realize that was such a regional thing and that so few of us use that term!

Always sneakers, even when playing tennis.

We thought calling them "tennis shoes" was pretentious.  An exotic, foreign term.

New York now.  New York always.   New York forever!

@THEY CallMe Mr Wilkes   Yes, sneakers. Born and NY and most of my family there or FL. Everyone calls them sneakers....even if at the gym....still sneakers.

Sneakers in NJ growing up.  Through activities during my life I have worn specific shoes, tennis only, running, walking, basketball and general.

The umbrella word in Sneakers which I love and wear most days.

I always called them sneakers, but more recently, with all the different styles, I call them by their function.

Athletic shoes for walking, jogging, tennis, basketball, etc.

Fashion sneakers that are worn for fashion.

I call styles like Keds just plain old sneakers.
