I don't think there has to be a holiday - they were going off by me the last few nights too.

I don't think it's a holiday.  Some cultures set of fireworks to celebrate weddings.  Perhaps it's something like that.  There were fireworks all over here when the Patriots won the Super Bowl.

Perhaps a Mardi Gras grand finale?  We had a  huge parade in the metro area in which I live.

Maybe a drive-by shooting?  Nowadays you never know.

Someone did that around here on Monday. I'm really hating these noises that scares our little ones who don't understand, but get scared to death!

Thinking like a New Mexican, the first thing that came to mind was gunfire -- then I saw your post and had to laugh.

To train hunting dogs they take the pups out into the woods with their mother at a very young age and shoot off guns over their heads. When the mother doesn't react , the puppies also take it for granted. If a pup does act skittish they will be exposed to shooting over & over & over until they get used to it.Like everything else - dogs should be trained to not get a reaction to loud noises. If the owner didn't make a big deal about it , the dog wouldn't either.

When we were kids my Grandma was terrified of lighting and thunder. My Mom was having no parts of us picking up on that and told her to go be alone in her room as we are perfectly safe in the house and she wasn't having that fear instilled in her children.
