Re: I seriously don't know what to do

I don't blame you for not wanting to knock on their door and from what you have said, it would just be too stressful and not even of help.  They obviously could not care less about what they are doing.

The only solution seems to be to talk to officals in your town.  Tell them what you told us, that you can't even reason with these people and have become a prisoner in your own home.  If your town is smallish, you could talk to the mayor's offce.  How about City Hall?

It is an awful situation that you should not have to be in.  Those neighbors are really a disgrace.

Gooc luck.  I really hope you can get this taken care of.

I think nagging the city council person would help...they may not do anything to remedy the problem, but they would look into it just to get the person off their back. I would just knock on their door each time you need to leave and tell them you are sure they would rather you ask them than calling the city to come out, etc.

Explain you need to leave and don't want to damage their vehicles.

They might get tired of you knocking and park elsewhere, or they can just move their cars when you make a request.

You should not feel intimidated.  You have every right to leave your house when you want to.

@Carmie

That doesn't always work if the neighbors are aholes.

We have the same exact problem and eventually did try to talk to them about it, politely explaining how hard it made it for us to enter or exit our driveway.

We sometimes have to drive down a curb to get out, great for our vehicles, right?

Well, they promptly told us that the cars were parked on the public street, in front of  their property lines.

And because it's a public street, local government/police won't get involved, as the OP mentioned.

@luvmyteddy4  At all possible I would talk to a lawyer to see what your legal options are. Sometimes lawyers look into these problems free of charge for senior citizens.

Re: I seriously don't know what to do

I'm wondering if you have enough room to have a small turnaround poured to the side of your driveway so you could go out front first.  We used to live on a busy street and had one poured.  It was the only safe way to exit.

Re: I seriously don't know what to do

It's a tough situation for the OP. She said it is a city street and there is no ordinance against on street parking. Calling the police will not help. They can't ticket vehicles that are parked legally.

Make an appointment with your city manager if you live in a small town, or your city alderman or representative. Take pictures of the vehicles that are parked across from your driveway. Ask that the city engineer come out and observe the situation. Request that the city restrict parking to one side of the street and to paint lines at the end of the driveways so that vehicles cannot park closer than say 20 feet to the end of the driveway.  Try to stay calm and emphasize that you are concerned about safety for pedestrians as well as your car being blocked. Bring up the issue of emergency vehicles not being able to get down your street. And like someone else suggested try to enlist the other neighbors on your block. It will be easier to get the city to take action if you are not the only one complaining. Good luck.

@homedecor1   Having many years of dealing with unreasonable people (my profession and I won't go into detail), I would STRONGLY urge the poster to get 3rd party assistance to deal with these incorrigible individuals making her life so miserable!

She did make some mention of her age so I assume she's not a young woman.  She is alone and they have multiple people visiting that residence across the street.  She really doesn't know what's going on inside.

If her neighbors on her side of the street would join with her in contacting city officials/newspaper/media I think that's her best bet to put pressure on these troublemakers to change their ways or, if they choose not to change then let THEM MOVE .

I do not see this situation improving for her unless and until someone in "authority" challenges them with sanctions/fines/court orders.

I would NOT deal with these individuals myself.

Also, I hope she has a good security system that's viewable from her phone.

@pdlinda

Absolutely I thought in my post I suggested she check with the authorities/municipality  ....no where in my answer did I advise her to deal again with the neighbor.   It's obvious they don't care...

People are getting crazier by the minute -- here it's like the wild west (FL) one thing I'd never do is confront anyone where the smallest thing "angers" them & most carry concealed weapon.

In addition,pretty ridiculous to be stuck in ones home due to ignorant neighbors.

Re: I seriously don't know what to do

If they are parked next to your property and you have sprinklers, change the 1/2 circle to a full circle, and their car will be washed whenever you turn on the sprinklers, causing water spots.

If you are able to back in to your driveway, it would be a lot easier getting out.  This may not be an option, and I really sympathize with you - miserable neighbors are awful.

Every time you need to leave, knock on their door and ask them to move their vehicles.  If they become a problem when you make the request, call the authorities or your mayor.  Sounds like it's an access issue and when the houses were built, the city should have prevented that.

As someone mentioned, squeaky wheels get the grease.

I called the city years ago and they looked up my street and I was told it was smaller than most in the whole city but of course they aren't going to widen it for me.

I refuse to set foot on their property for any reason and not every day when I want to leave. Just like that Easter week, no one was even at the house for 6 days.

There was even a fire behind their house that Easter weekend. If it had been on our street the 7 firetrucks would have moved their cars for them!

Had I known the 5 cars left at Easter for 6 days I would have had the cars ticketed for not moving them. Legally you have to move your car every 48 hours if left on the street but I had no idea they would be gone that long. I can't back into their driveways because they park 2 cars there.

@luvmyteddy4

Seems to me that if the street is too narrow. street parking should be allowed on only one side of the street.  I'm sure the local representatives are different than the last time you called ....  see if some regulation is being broken or ignored.  I feel for you ... it's a real pain trying to maneuver a car around others.

Re: I seriously don't know what to do

I would not park "in" my driveway, rather I would block my own driveway and park horizontally and then be able to leave when you have to.
