Re: I'm Home From My Surgery

@NickNack

It's been 6 years this week since my brother lost his kidney, which came 2-3 years after the cancerous tumor was removed.   Both procedures were extremely painful for him, and he was too stubborn to take the pain meds.   I think he walked every inch of the farm walking thru his pain.

Continued prayers for your recovery.

Re: I'm Home From My Surgery

Thank you so much, everyone, for your thoughts and prayers for healing.  I saw the Nurse Practitioner in my surgeon's office yesterday.  She doubled my oxycodone from 5 mg to 10 mg.  I do think it helps more than the 5 mg, but it doesn't alleviate the pain.  I didn't expect it to, but wanted to make sure this amount of pain was normal.

I'm not sure that I posted that the five incisions were very red.  I was afraid I migtht have an infection.  She said that it was an allergic reaction to either the glue that he used or to the actual sutures.  The last time I had surgery (in 2007) I had a terrible rash and itching around the incisions.  They said it was from the steri-strips and to ask the surgeon to use something else the next time I had surgery.  I did, and that's why he used glue.  Now I'm guessing it's the sutures that I'm allergic to.  I hope that if I need surgery again at some point there are a different type of sutures that could be used.  I'm going to ask him what he used and make a note of it.  I am itching terribly around the incisions.  The NP gave me a steroid cream to put around the sutures for itching.  I can't put it over the actual incision though.  She also told me to take Benadryl.

She did a urinalysis and blood work to check everything.  They should be back around Thursday.  She sent the urine out to culture it, although I don't feel like I have a UTI.  I'm glad I went.  I was so exhausted afterwards though.

I am so greatful for my sister.  She is doing so much for me.  Ava and Henry are a wonderful comfort to have with me all the time.  Ava is using the steps to the bed, and I'm just going to keep them there.

I do apologize for the length of this post.

Re: I'm Home From My Surgery

Good morning @NickNack

Thanks for the update.  Please don't ever feel the need to apologize for any length of a post.  Most of us here are anxious for the updates so we know how you're doing.  Others just don't need to read it.

As far as your sister's assistance goes, it's a wonderful thing to have loving & caring family member(s) to help with one another.  I'm sure she feels grateful to you also & feels better knowing she's able to help you.  Heart  Bless her for her kindness.

I'm so glad you made yesterday's appt.  It's always better to be on the safe side esp. after surgery & if you have concerns.  Usually, it helps to give you peace of mind.  It's good they increased your med & gave you the cream to use arround your incision.  I pray you feel more comforted soon & hope your test results are ok.

In my heart, I just knew Ava & Henry would be on their best behavior.  Our pets feel our pain & happiness as well.

(FYI:  I didn't mention this yesterday, but a good friend of ours has had a few surgeries lately with a couple more on the horizon.  Her most recent was shoulder surgery which was worse than first diagnosed.  She describes her pain level as "it feels like an icicle is going through one end to the other."  Like you, she's been on oxycodone this whole time & still needs to take it for the pain.  She also thought she should have stayed in the hospital for at least another day.  They doped her up a lot after surgery so she could have the minimum pain level of 5 (I think) so they could release her.  I just let you know this because this type of treatment on patients I think is more common now.  As they say, a drive-thru type of hospital treatment.  Just doesn't seem fair.)

I hope today brings you some smiles & sunshine to help you feel better.  Wishing you the best.  Heart

Re: I'm Home From My Surgery

So glad you are back home in your favorite surroundings and with your two love bugs. The pain will ease as the days go back - it just takes time.  Keep Ava and Henry close to you because they will give you such comfort, especially at night when pain feels the worse. We all care about our sweet lady.

Don't ever feel sorry for talking about your issues.that is when you do you find out you are not the only one..

Ask your surgeon what "crazy glue" did they use...Make sure you you carry it with you and that it is in your file in bold letters..I have a severe allergy to one of the contrasts they used..My family would never remember.

I carry a list in my purse of things that I have had bad reactions to..Even the name of a Dr. that is NEVER to EVER come near me! My primary put it in bold red letters! All my DR.s and and specialists are all at the same hospital and can see all notes in my file.

Don't ever be afraid to ask or say something if it doesn't seem right..The Dr.s are working for you and its your body!

Always call and ask for a transcript of everything that went on from the time you got to the hospital and when you left.( I have a plastic tote full)

Wishing you a speedy recovery..Please take it slow and don't over do..

Hugs!

Re: I'm Home From My Surgery

@NickNack

Appreciate your update. I get irritated every time I hear how quickly they release patients after a major surgery such as yours. It has everything to do with medical insurance. Can't let their profits dip just because a patient is in pain.

Like you mentioned. Every time I have taken my wife to the ER, where she has ended up with Intestinal surgery(12 of them), Morphine did nothing so I would always tell the nurse she needed dilaudid for her pain.

Sorry to hear you are in so much pain and wish there were something I could think of that might help you. My thoughts are with you through this very tough time. 🙏
