I know I'm sensitive, but does this bother anyone else?

I've watched some cooking shows lately and in the past (not on Q) where the chefs are making a lobster or crab dish and I just cringe when they put the live lobster in the boiling pot. During one show many years ago, the chef put the lobster in the pot of boiling water but didn't put lid on securely and when he turned to do another part of the dish the poor lobster was trying to climb out of the pot!  He then put lobster back in and secured the lid.   Does anyone else feel bad for the lobsters or is it just me?

No you're not alone, I couldn't do it.

I grew up on a farm where we raised animals for our food.  No matter how cute they were, we never named them, or thought of them as pets; they were food.

We don't look at deer and think Bambi; they are food.

I don't eat lobster, but dropping one into boiling water wouldn't bother me.

Any responsible chef cooking live lobster knows about using the tip of a large kitchen knife right behind the head, to quickly and humanely kill the lobster before putting it in the boiling water, so it doesn't suffer.

Not sure what kind of cooking shows you watch, that show such a cruel method of cooking lobster.......

Raw lobster sounds even worse.

A couple weeks ago a friend was given 2 live lobsters burt she couldn't cook them and offered them to me.  I said that no I couldn't either.  She eventually found someone to take them.

Bur we eat cows, chickens, pigs, fish which are killed as well, but we don't have to see it happen.  I guess that's the difference.

Edited to add: Remember the I Love Lucy show when she was trying to cook a lobster?

I love lobster but wouldn't want to see one being cooked.  And to show that on TV is pretty gross.

I just read an article this morning that had a video with it. A Lady was cooking up a crab boil....crabs, onions, corn on the cob and potatoes.  The water was boiling and the crab  and veggies were in the pot.

When she checked the pot, the crab was still alive and eating the corn.  I don't know why he was still alive in that boiling water.

I cook live crabs and lobster.  I used to just drop them in boiling water head first  and put the lid on.   Now I kill them first in a humane way before cooking them.

Yes, it bothers me, but I get over it. I love seafood

we steam crabs live and eat them......it is the only way to cook them.

crab feasts are a big thing in maryland.

no, it does not bother me because i grew up with that.
