I agree with statement of yours.  It's my thought exactly.  He very well  could care, he didn't have to show at all, but sometimes things like this, just happen.  I hope it all comes out for the best for you.

Not uncommon once you hit your 50's. Corporations get away with age discrimination all the time. Sad but true.

@RetRN  It is also done in the federal government; they use sneaky tactics to sidetrack discrimination.

@Gracies Mom  I am so sorry you had to experience that kind of disrespect given what you were bearing with your mother and your own recovery from radiation.  I hope your health will improve and your retirement can be enjoyed....

Re: I don't even know what to make of this

Well, I spoke to an attorney and because this is an "at will state" they can do anything they want to me except discrimination, etc. So I am still fighting my write-up with knowledge. I had a meeting with them today and questioned the accuracy of some things. The HR person listened and said she would find out and we are meeting again in the AM.  All of this is so stressful. To top it off, I had to evacuate for the hurricane with my 3 dogs and 4 parrots. I brought "Noah's Ark" to a motel. My animals entertained some children and that was fun. Luckily, we have no damage and the power did not go off. The hurricane just scraped our coast but I am 2 miles inland so no damage done.

So sorry to hear the attorney can't really help, but it's always better to know where you stand.  Sounds like you were well prepared for the meeting and that makes a big difference.

I was taking a nutrition class and the instructor had a holistic approach.  She said every night to write down 5 things for which you were grateful. She said it's important to write them because that makes a connection with your brain.  I usually did it at bed time and I did surprise myself with how many good things I found in a day that had not seemed so good!  When you mentioned how your pets entertained and that you didn't lose power, it made me think of that.

@conlt PLEASE contact an attorney who specializes in Labor Relations Law. Don't go to a "general practice" attorney.  I was a legal secretary for many years and urge you to do this PRONTO to protect yourself!!

@conlt

I know 7 days have passed since your original post and that a holiday has intervened as well.  However, I do hope you've taken the above advice and procured the services of an attorney.

In the late 90s and up through 2001, I worked for a large community hospital in a regulatory position.  It became known to me, firsthand information, that a number of physicians were way, way out of compliance with a number of federal regulations and so it was my duty to report this to a certain federal agency.  Prior to doing so, I reported to my superior, one of the hospital's vice president's, that certain physicians had gone way beyond being out on a limb, according to federal regulations. I was imploring her to speak with them for the good of the institution.  Instead numerous high-powered people in the hospital began to make my life miserable.  My superior falsely accused me with having threatened the CFO of the hospital!!!  And, so, she sent me for mandatory "counselling twice a week for 8 weeks."  I sat there in front of her and said, "I fully realize you've schemed against me and created this entire incident with the CFO.  You're on notice that as soon as I have procured legal representation, any conversation you wish to have with me, you may have with my attorney."  Believe me when I tell you that not only did I have no problem finding a great attorney, but the psych doc she sent me to, released me after 4 sessions, indicating he couldn't come up with a diagnosis, because there was nothing wrong with me.

Hang in there.  Get that attorney and be strong!!!

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother.  And to add this on top of it is just awful.

My husband went through something like this.  We consulted an attorney and got the exact answer you did. He was a specialist attorney as well.  I remember well what he said "in this state, they can fire you for a good reason, a bad reason, or no reason."  Meaning, he was out of luck.

He was able to work things out and keep his job.  I hope you can do that if it's what you want.

My daughter has a parrot - a caique.

@candyagain Happy Labor Day, fellow union member and officer.

I'm retired, happily, and securely, thanks to my union after 35 years for one employer and another 4 years prior with other employers.  I was very active in my union, and actually helped to found it.  Loved being a steward and member of the executive board.  Wishing you continued success with the hard work it takes to keep the union strong and grow its ranks.

Isn't it unfortunate that we know that "Employers Handbook" all too well and also can often recognize the "big guns" national law firms they use by name.

The saddest part, for me, is how so many employees don't understand that they are entitled to respect and dignity from the employer.  And too many folks also believe that the company and bosses are always right.

Warm regards,

aroc3435

Aroc, I'm not a union officiail any longer but not yet retired. I still am able to help by making sure that co workers that come to me know their rights, exactly what to say to their supervisor and who to go to for assistance in the current union team.

It was a lot of work but being able to help others is a great reward. Watching employees that are beaten down regain their dignity and the abiity to stand up to bullies is its own reward.  Not to mention keeping theri jobs.

I worked with a wonderful team. We started together in the union when our governor wanted salary cutbacks and layoffs. Together we were able to learn how to negotiate contracts, mobilize the members and make improvements for a work force that was rapidly changing but still operating with outdated employee rules. I started on the negotiations team, then to the executive committee as area rep, then treasurer, and then president (steward) for eighteen years.

What I learned by being active in the union helped me in other areas of my life, too. I was able to bring negotiation knowkedge to my town government abd school committee. I also know the "back story" on some state and national news!

Happy belated Labor Day. Great to meet another union worker!
