Either that or maybe it's just that I hold onto my technology too long.  So, this week I updated my Mac's OS to Catalina.  I knew better; I don't know why I did it.  Sure enough, it disabled my Microsoft Office along with a few other things and also removed my Dashboard.  I know those of you who don't own Mac probably have no idea what I'm talking about, but I used that Dashboard on a daily basis.  I had my local weather radar there as well as forecasts, a calculator, a conversions calculator, an Area Code Finder, a dictionary, and the phonetic alphabet among a few other things I didn't really use, all in one place at the push of a button.  Now, to get something to sorta emulate it I have to pay $5 in the App store, and it doesn't even have all the stuff I had installed.  Bummer.

I can deal with the loss of MS Office.  I'll just migrate my stuff over to Mac's Pages which opens Office documents and can also export to Office for sharing.  I don't need fancy.  The other things I used on a regular basis I was able to find 64-bit updates so I can still use them, but there are some things I only used on occasion that do not have the 64-bit capability, so I'll have to find an alternative if I can.  Hopefully, the alternative will be even better.

On top of that, I had to get a new Tablet since my old one was way past it's usable life.  A couple of years ago my Son in Law hacked into it and updated it to a later version of Android for me so I was able to get a couple of extra years out of it.  I found out at Christmas he too has had to buy a new one, so don't feel too bad about that. I had to get a new phone last year when I could no longer even get into my Contacts to make a phone call.

So, today, after having the tablet since before Christmas was the day to set it up.  First, I had to install the protective screen cover.  I was fearing that so much because when I got my phone, the girl had to try twice to get the screen protector on and she still ended up leaving a bubble that I kept trying to get out until eventually I was finally able to get the bubble out, but it cracked the screen protector doing it.  I followed all the directions and oh all the bubbles I had to push out, one obstinate one right in the middle of the screen.  They say to work them out from the middle first, but that one just wouldn't budge.  I ended up using my finger (which was how I cracked the one on my phone) to get it out, but I am now declaring victory.  I was disappointed they didn't include the little squeege tool to get the bubbles out.

Migrating all my stuff over was pretty easy although I did have to do a little extra work to set up my E-mail accounts.  Next was customizing the home screens with my apps.  So, there are several apps Samsung puts on the home screen that I have no use for.  One of them was Netflix.  So, I long-press on the app and a little blurb shows up with options of what to do with it.  I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to push that app over to the Remove option.  Then, I thought maybe you have to do it from the list of apps, so I try that, but all that did was to add ANOTHER Netflix icon on my home screen which I also couldn't remove.   It took me forever to figure out that you just long-press the icon until the options show up and then you click on the option you want.  So, I think I'll stop there for tonight.  I'll try and organize everything tomorrow when I'm fresh

Sorry for the long post, but I thought some might enjoy a little laugh at my expense.  At least I was able to work through it eventually.  But, you would expect more from a former engineer I would think.

@Icegoddess You might be my savior.  I also just updated my mac to Catalina.  I, too, lost my Microsoft Office...all of my word documents.  How did you go to pages and migrate documents that no longer exist?  You are giving me hope that I can go to pages and somehow retrieve my word docs.  I feel your pain!

@Icegoddess , I feel your pain.  I hate setting up new devices.  I don't do it often enough to be good at it.  I muddle my way through but I don't enjoy it.

Someone installed Malware Bytes for me which I now run regularly.

Hope you enjoy your new setup!  LM

I also have a Mac but I haven't received notice of any update to Catalina.  Now I dread it.  That's the one thing about Macs.  I love mine except for some of the updates.

I admire your courage in tackling. My computer displayed corrupted on New Years, the day it would no longer be supported by Windows since old. DH spent many hours backing up computer- above my tech level. Hopefully all backed up but think I need to upgrade computer. I got a tablet few months ago to use in kitchen but have been unsuccessful in installing email. Can’t figure out what i am doing wrong. I keep attacking the technology because I know it’s gotten to be such integral part of life,
Another part of aging that I am experiencing- just got notice that my doctor is retiring! Month notice. He gave two options- one picture of Doctor looked like he was on some opioid!😂oh my. I thought my doctor was young. Search begins for doctor taking new patients.

@phoenixbrd , if Word is no longer available, simply double-clicking on the document as you would normally should bring it up in Pages.  Pages won't even change the extension unless you edit it.

@Twins Mom, I'm still running Windows 7 on my Windows machine.  I only use it for a few apps I couldn't use on my Mac.  One of those is native the XP and another one the developer has told me they don't currently plan to aandon the platform.  I don't get on the internet with it.  My pattern drafting program updates from within the program itself.  So, I see no reason for me to update to Windows 10.

I back up all the time.  You just need a ackup drive and the software to do it.  Some people keep their machines continuously backed up, but I no longer trust that method.  I think that is why these businesses have ended up having to pay ransoms to get their data back.  Continuously backing up will allow the mal-ware to be backed up to the back-up drive.

I don't know what tablet you have (I went from Samsung to Samsung), but my E-mail setup was really easy this time.  I clicked on Add Email.  It came up with some common E-mail platforms to choose from.  I have 2 Yahoo accounts, so I clicked on Yahoo, then entered my full yahoo E-mail address (including the .com) and then entered my password.  I have another E-mail account that fell in the "Other" category, but the process was exactly the same.

If you have to enter stuff like pop3, if you are replacing a tablet that works you should be able to find that information under Settings/Email.  I had my old tablet sitting there on that screen expecting to have to do that , but didn't.  Maybe your hubby could help you with that.  If you have an iPad, you could try Customer Service.  I have gotten good help from them in the past on my Mac, although I ended up having to go to the store and working with a Genius.  That's another option if you have an Apple Store nearby.
