Re: I Must be Getting Old

[ Edited ]

@Bridgegal , @Icegoddess , all of my electronics are Apple.  I can text from my iPhone and also from my iPad.  My iPad does not have data but I can text over wifi.  Here is what I found with iPad.  I have iPad Pro about three years old.  I can text to other Apple devices over wifi but if I try to text to an android device, it never goes through.  To text to Android, I have to use my phone.

PS, just goggled and found this...

An iPad cannot send SMS text messages since it is not a phone. It can send iMessages to other Apple devices. On your iPhone make sure in Settings -> Messages -> Text Message Forwarding -> Text Message Forwarding is turned On.

@Icegoddess , Inam like you.  If there is something electronic in my house that needs to be fixed, I am the one to do it.  I worked from home for the last ten years of my career so I did everything to troubleshoot computers.

I just got a new iPhone XR and I am not liking it,  I have an appointment at the Apple store next week.  Phone froze and had to be entirely reset.  Of course, I didn't have everything backed up...my bad.  Not really a big deal as I have the important stuff on my MacBook Pro.  I have had problems with people not hearing me and me not hearing people well on the phone.  I think they should give me a new phone.  Of course, Apple rarely does that.  When I had issues with the MacBook Prp and wasn't satisfied with their service I told them I was going to small claims court.  Then they fixed the issue🙄.

If you get a new phone, my advice is don't get the XR.

I think I am finally going to cave and get either Apple Music or Spotify premium.  I am tired of managing the music when devices change.  I still don't like the idea of cloud storage, do you?  LM

@Bridgegal @Lilysmom you can send a text (SMS OR MMS) message from your E-mail as long as you know the phone number and their provider:  https://20somethingfinance.com/how-to-send-text-messages-sms-via-email-for-free/

@LilysmomI agree with you on cloud storage.  I don't use it.  I don't want my stuff held hostage by the Cloud.  You can't get to your stuff if your wifi goes down.  And, who knows, they may decide to start charging you for access to your own stuff besides the fact that it's open to hacking in the Cloud.  Nope, I keep my stuff on my laptop and make regular backups, although I don't have automatic backups anymore.  I think if you have automatic backups on and you get one of the ransomware bugs, it'll get backed up to your backup device and you will have to pay to get your data back.  That is why these businesses are getting hit, because they automatically back up all their data on a continuous or daily basis.

The only thing I ever keep on my phone is my contacts and pictures. I don't do financial transactions or shopping on it.  I also don't keep sensitive information on my tablet.  If I'm traveling, I can E-mail myself anything I might need that I don't want to get stolen.  I might keep a copy of all my travel data on it and my travel insurance if I bought it, but that's it.  I haven't yet tried out the fingerprint scanner or facial recognition, but I am thnking about it before my next trip.  I'll probably go for the fingerprint scanner because I'm afraid my device might not recognize me with different hair or makeup or with/without reading glasses (or maybe you have to do always do the facial recognition without your glasses on).

So, I could text people who have iPhones but not people who have Samsung, for example.  UGH.

@Icegoddess     AH, that is helpful.   I'm going to try it out with a text via email to my friend with a samsung.  Thanks!

@Icegoddess , I set up facial recognition on my phone.  However, if the phone does not see my face, it opts for the passcode screen which also allows entry.  LM

Thanks @Lilysmom.  I currently don't even have a security screen at all on either device.  But, good to know.
