@Icegoddess    At least your potential service led to some enlightening discussions on this thread.

Very surprised by a lot of what I read, actually.

@Nightowlz You do know you can be sent to jail for not complying?  I hear jail isn't so great in a pandemic either.

@Sooner

I know that but I'm still not doing it or going to jail.

@Nightowlz  Well anarchy seems to be in vogue now.  So fine for you to just ignore the law.

@Sooner

Not saying I'm going to ignore it just telling them I'm not doing it. I'm almost 63 so they can have the young do it.

@Nightowlz seriously, you're so old at almost 63?  I'm 61, I haven't missed a day of work during the "pandemic" that you are all so fond of falling back.  Get out and do your civic duty and stop complaining.  Jeez, the folks on these boards are amazing with the me attitude.

@bobbydeeschair  - I was laughing at that response about 63 being "old".  Since when is 63 old?? lol.

The first time I was called, it was rather exciting.  I was eager to serve and was happy when I called in and they had my number.  So I went up to the court house, which was quite far from me.  My job knew about it.  I had warned them when I got the letter and called in when I was picked. So I sat around for a while. Then they called my number.  I ended up being on the jury.  There wasn't really a way the way they pick you.  It was more on your looks then anything else.  When they called my number, I stood up.  The prosecution side looked and defense side looked at me.  The judge told me to go up to the jury box. Even after 12 of us were called, they kept calling number of the ones picked, got rid of them and picked new ones. I survived.  The trial lasted the whole day until nearly 7:00PM.  We got a unanimous decision and the was the end of it. When we got out, reporters were there shoving mikes in our faces.  I got out of there quickly!  I didn't want to be the foreman of the jury.  So one of us got roped in to it.  He had to write everything we argued down.  Then wrote a question we had to the judge.  He did all the work.  I remembred during the trial to write notes.  So everyone had paper and pens.  It was memorial kind of event, so I'm glad I served.

@songbird  - I've never heard of being selected based on one's looks.

@San Antonio Gal @songbird  I've never heard of this. You need to be questioned by lawyers to see what if any bias you have any any other stuff pertinent to the case. 'Based on looks'. Give me a break. Did they choose any men?

They didn't ask me anything.  I just stood up in front of them.  They both (defense & prosecution side) looked at me.  By looks I think them meant gender & race (important for a jury)  They either nodded at each other, or consulted among themselves.  After you were picked, again they looked at the makeup of the jury.  Called some back & picked some more.  the judge was the only one that questioned you.

@songbird  I guess your state's jury system is a lot different than New York's.

I did jury duty a couple of years ago... a week it took as I was chosen to be on a jury. I found it to be a huge waste of my time.  I will never do it again... and I  would never consider to do it during this pandemic until it is totally over.  If I ever get a card in the mail I will throw it away.

@SeaMaiden

That's what I did several years ago. I received one in the mail & left for Fl the next morning for about 3 wks.

Sounds really strange. When I was called for jury duty they called a panel and both the defense and DA asked questions the voir dire. The potential juror was either accepted or excused. I don't think looks had anything to do with this. This was in GA.

You're way over-reacting, and you sound like you're just DYING to rat someone out and get them in trouble. Ick.

I'm not. Years ago, on another board, someone bragged she was on a jury and had been instructed not to discuss it with ANYONE, so she then proceeded to tell us where the trial was, what it was about, and announced that before the trial had even started she'd made up her mind.

Going on the informtion she blabbed,I called the authorities and had them read what she wrote. The poor woman nearly had kittens; after she recovered she said, "I'll get to the botton of this!"

And Miss Blabbermouth was never heard from again.
