I think the INsurance, maybe be more a southern thing? I have a friend in VA who I believe says INsurance.

 

Same with umBRELLa is how we say that.

Had a midwestern friend who always said UMbrella.

I'm with those who believe pronunciations are likely regional.

 

One of my favorite courses when I was a college senior 6 decades ago was History of the English Language.  The professor could tell us where we had lived depending upon our pronunciations.  I wish I still had the list of words she asked each of us to say.

 

I know from personal experience that the regional differences also affect our word choices.

inSUREance. Here in the south they say INsurance

But I also say CEEment, TEEvee, GREEN beans

@smoochy  Another one is TARRS for Tires.. and MOTORCICKLE for Motorcycle😄

 

I have the Midwest Nasal tone mentioned by southerners and talk like a Northerner.
