@Shanus wrote:@Sooner That's awful and is rather scary to me.
We're noticing older folks are traveling less now for those reasons. A couple in the their 70's may be sitting ducks. Definitely no jewelry with me and very little cash/cards in my small crossbody bag.
Thanks for the advice.
@Shanus You will be fine--just know exactly where you are going, do not stray off the crowded areas, and be aware of your surroundings. Just like the rest of the world now! It is lovely and you'll have a great time. Lots to see and experience in that area!
Even back in the day I would say that for many places--like New Orleans where we spent a lot of time, along with D.C. and some other major cities.

@Sooner Yes, in the DC area where I go often for shows/classes, etc. I'm always on the watch!
It doesn't need to be a big city to get into trouble. Crime is even in the malls and grocery stores. No places are really safe anymore.

@Shanus Unfortunately it is in places that have been safe before. Sad sad thing.

I once went to New Orleans alone when my sister gave me plane tickets for a couple weeks of babysitting. I was constantly warned by the people at the hotel to stay out of certain areas and don't go out at night. They even had the cathedral taped off with yellow tape, drug activity, I guess. I was just fine and would go again in a heartbeat. I was an antiques dealer at the time and found some marvelous buys to bring home with me.

I am glad that I didn't see this thread until now. My son-in-law was called in to the main office for a week, and he took his wife, our daughter, and the twin girls, age seven now, along. He was at work most of the time, and she was with the girls, but now they all are on the plane to fly home.
We texted while there, nothing seemed scary.
The girls had a great time. Loved the ocean and beach and dolfin boat. That's all I know for now. Son in law is an electrical engeneer. He works from home, but the Headquarters are in Savannah.

Does Paula Deen still have her restaurant there? I think it was called "Lady & Sons".

We got on the wrong road trying to get to the ramp over the bridge near the tourist area (can't remember it's name) down by the river. ONE block off the highway, in sight of the riverfront area.
To make a long story short, we tried to turn around in a spot, were blocked from exiting by two cars sitting there that we hadn't noticed and two guys got out walking toward our car.
We backed up and were about to jump a curb to get away. A cop car appeared from the highway, turned on lights and beeped the siren, then the patrolman jumped out and put his had on his gun-and one of the guys backed up letting us out.
So NO do NOT stray off the tourist path. Even ONE block. This was in broad daylight about 2 p.m. It was about 8 years ago and I never felt threatened otherwise. But I think I would be even more cautious now days.
@Sooner If it is the area I am thinking, you don't know how lucky you are.

@Georgiagrama This was some years back, but it was on the main road going down to the riverfront area, just a few blocks from the riverfront. We thought it led to the bridge ramp, got about a block in and we said we need to turn around.
I'll bet the PD keeps a close watch on the area! But yes, God was with us!
I can't imagine now in today's world.
