I do use sweetie for little people under 12, and feline & canine species ;-)

I'm sure you are using these terms in a friendly way.
But...once in a while, they can be used in a snide way. I was in line at the market, and there was a cart parked up ahead of me....no shopper in sight. So when it was time for the next person to place their groceries on the belt, I moved that cart out of the way and unloaded my cart. After my things were on the counter, a woman came along with several grocery items in her arms and wanted to go ahead of me with the cart I had pushed aside.
I said no..my things were already unloaded and that was when she said something to me like "Hon..people forget things all the time and you need to let them go back and pick things up and get back in place in line"
In that case, I didn't like being called Hon and I didn't let her cut in.

@september, no generalization, I lived there and the people I came in contact were rude and I thought her comment was rude!

@Bird mama, I must be missing something, why do you say it is a bad habit, I certainly don't think so!

Or "Kiddo"......... Say what? I am a proud mom of grown children and a proud grandmother of 4 !
@pggoody wrote:I don't like it when a store clerk calls me sweetie or " cute" names. Leaving Costco today the woman at the door called me " lovie" and told me to ve sure to drink lots of water. I felt as though she was making the comment because of my age. Yes, I know I am old enough to be someone's grandmother, but I am very active, fit, dress fashionably , am told I don't look my age. I had just left the gym so had workout clothes on and very little makeup. The way she made the comment , it made me feel OLD.
Guess I am just being sensitive.😳

@Imadickens wrote:Guilty as charged! I'm afraid I am another who calls others affectionate names! It's not meant to offend or be condisending, I was reared in a Southern family, we all did it! I always had pet names for my students, and as I got older I found my self doing the same with anyone with with whom I spoke. I understand some people don't like it and I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but it's second nature to me and I don't think I could stop now! As far as the water, I think she was just being nice, making chit chat. Better than telling you to go "F" yourself, which I've been told to do before!
@Imadickens...DITTO! I guess if hon, sugar, darlin', etc. offends someone, we can always say "bless your heart".
Back attcha!😘

I understand that you feel it's disrespectful, but I'm sure that is absolutely was NOT their intention.
I'm sorry to say that you would probably find me to be "offensive" as I do the same thing when I have the blessing to be out in public (I'm semi-housebound due to illness). I often address others as "Love"..ex.."Thank you "Love".. "Have a nice day, Love", etc.....It's just "my way" of interacting with others and sharing my heart.
When someone addresses you in a "loving way"..take it as a "blessing" my dear....there is so much sadness and hatred in the world...when someone reaches out to you with an open heart and extends "Love" in any respect.. ....consider it a "gift"...
And, if this post offends you, I'm sorry..It's only my personal opinion, and I'm trying to offer you another perspective.
Blessings...

not sure if how the words are being said to me that irks me or if I know the people who call me these words that I don't mind.
@viva923, Typical comment from someone from DE, I hated the 3 yrs I lived there, people were just downright rude!!!
What I find rude, is making a generalization about everyone from one area of the country and saying they are all "downright rude".
@september...I agree wholeheartedly! @Hooty....don't you think what you said was rude and uncalled for? We certainly do!
@viva923....you are a sweet poster, it seems to alot of us. Do not let this one poster, who seems to need a lesson in politeness, get you down! Stay nice as you always seem to be!
