Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

Love the self service register if I can pay cash for my groceries. It's getting now they want card only at my local grocery store. Walmart still takes cash at some self checkout registers though.

I prefer self checkout.

I don't need conversation.

I don't want all glass jars/bottles clanking together in one bag like it always seemed to happen (like nails on a chalkboard for me).

I can hear what I'm being charged as I scan.  Cashiers are way too quick to scan while I'm still unloading and going back seems like it's a PITA for them.  Not me, but them...

Just like online shopping.  It will do away with jobs like dept store personnel.  Sad but true.

When ATMs *happened*, we all thought that tellers would be obsolete....I do my banking inside and rarely use the ATM.

I think it's stupid that my state still has gas station attendants.  Not needed.  Maybe will bring down the price?  I think we're the only state in the union that still has them.  Again, stupid, jmo.

@CalminHeart  Fortunately, we live near a full service gas station. I will never pump gas.

I always liked full service stations. I haven't seen a full service gas station in decades. I've traveled to 49 states and several countries.

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

I found them very scary at first, but just decided one day to do it.  I usually go to walmart early in the morning if possible because it's somewhat less crowded, but at this  time they may have 1 or 2 checkout people if that and then the lines are long.  So, I just decided to do my own checking out.  There are 2 positives to it.  First, you can bag things the way you want them.  The other thing is that you usually don't have to wait in a line.  Things get forced on us and what can we do for the most part burt just learn to adapt the best we can.  It doesn't mean we like all the changes, but.....

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

I use both types of lanes and  don't mind self service. Unless one has health issues, there is no problem doing self-checkout. It was rude of that person to leave a cart filled with items just because there were no cashier lanes available. Not anything to brag about.

I thought full service gas stations were obsolete. I forgot that New Jersey still has them. I have no idea why the state doesn't join the rest of the country, unless they like being different.

I like self-checkouts in a store, but I vote for full service gas stations.

It could be raining - having someone pump the gas for you is great.

I noticed a few of you complaining about heavy bags.  Except on TV I have never seen anybody carry grocery bags.  In my neck of the woods we use these to get from car to house......

Not what I'm talking about.  I can lift and carry the bags just fine.  But the bags are flimsy plastic, so putting too much in a bag means that they tear.  I don't have a problem carrying bags from the car to my house, but I do have a problem with the bags splitting and dropping things out on the driveway. Especially when it's a carton of milk that breaks open.  Yuck!  I like packing my own bags.  Period.

In our major grocery chain, the office is raised so the mgrs can see the floor and the office is across the ends of the checkout.  They face the customers.

@ECBG

That sounds like a great arrangement.

@shoesnbags

In most grocery stores I have been in, either there is a raised half glass front office or a manager walking the line of baggers at the end to deal with adjustments and other issues, no doubt theft.
