I don't need conversation.
I don't want all glass jars/bottles clanking together in one bag like it always seemed to happen (like nails on a chalkboard for me).
I can hear what I'm being charged as I scan. Cashiers are way too quick to scan while I'm still unloading and going back seems like it's a PITA for them. Not me, but them...
Just like online shopping. It will do away with jobs like dept store personnel. Sad but true.
When ATMs *happened*, we all thought that tellers would be obsolete....I do my banking inside and rarely use the ATM.
I think it's stupid that my state still has gas station attendants. Not needed. Maybe will bring down the price? I think we're the only state in the union that still has them. Again, stupid, jmo.
Au contraire, Lucky! I always tell my husband if he died, I would have to move to New Jersey. Keeping our tanks full is his job.😄
On the other hand, like you I much prefer self checkout at the grocery. And things just keep getting more and more automated. I must have had a trigger finger yesterday. While checking out I accidently scanned an item 3 times. I hit the help button and two entries were automatically "erased". Very expedient!

Is this the way of the world now?
no, it's the same old classic nastiness of venting your spleen on someone who isn't allowed to answer back. Bullying has always been with us and people like you make sure it always will be.

@Lucky Charm I live in NY but on the border. I can walk to NJ from my house. The NJ gas station is right there and the gas is a dollar cheaper than the NY one a mile away. Glad gas stations in NJ still have attendants and are still cheaper than NY.

For a while early hours at the Walmart store they only had self checkout. But lately they seem to have one check out lane open too. I dont mind using self check if I only have a few things I am buying!

@CalminHeart We have some full service gas stations in Massachusetts, north of Boston. Two in my city.

@sarahpanda wrote:@Posh Poodle ..Thank you ! and to the others who poo-poo'ed me for not putting the items back - there are several reasons why ''I don't get out much'' as stated in the original post..so putting the items back would have been hard for me, being in the store in the first place was hard for me . And I know the attendant should have helped me to check my items out - but she never offered, just walked on off. So good people, sometimes you don't know the whole story . Thank you for your replies. And by the way - I'd still do the same thing again ...but luckily for me, I'm never going back in there again.
@sarahpanda Hold it- you said you asked the attendant if there is just self checkout available and proceeded to let her/him know your displeasure. Then you left your cart and walked away. Now you are saying the attendant just walked off.
It appears you didn't even ask for help. As soon as you announced your dislike, left the cart and walked away it was game over.
Now you don't have your groceries, you wasted time and probably gas, and had to start all over again elsewhere. If you could shop all over again then your excuse that it would have been too hard to replace the original items does not make sense.
It would have been better to ask for assistance and decide not to return again in the future.
FYI my DH cannot even ride and wait in our car anymore while I shop with a cane so do not accuse me of not being sympathetic. I am.
I just find you made a mountain out of nothing and in the end caused your own problem.
And I agree leaving the cart was wrong.

I wonder if leaving your cart and walking was the wrong thing to do. How about telling someone you were unable to do it. The error was just leaving it and walking away.
