Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

I read an interesting article about self- service at Walmart. They are having so much theft at the self service that they are using AI surveillance. Certain behavior( they did not say what) will cause a clerk to go to the specified station. The person may or may not be stealing just doing something out of the ordinary. The clerk tells the customer that the machine is " broken."She then opens a checkout station and rings everything up all over. The article said that self checkout has not been the boon they expected.

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

I have no issue with self checkout anywhere.  I don't mind doing it and I can pack the bags the way I want to.

I see many saying their local store doesn't have self checkout and while one hopes they stay that way, the $20 minimum wage coming in many states may change that.  Not to eliminate jobs, but to shift the labor to where it will create more sales revenue, such as a deli counter (less waiting equals more sold) or a bakery counter.

It is also true that the pool of people wanting cashier jobs is much smaller than before.  Just like @MG Chris, I work with the general public and do not want any more interaction than I already have.

You are spot on @Kachina624   Theft is huge and easy to do for those so inclined.  My ShopRite has done away with the self check-outs because of that.  What I found is that the employees often are not paying attention and even if they are can't see the screens from where they are standing.

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

Our Neighborhood WM has been under renovations for several months.  Yesterday, was the first time I've gone there in awhile -- much to my surprise all the cashier lanes are now "banks of self checkout areas".

They have 1 cashier lane -- the attendant at the self checkout lines was very helpful.

I'm sure this is going to be the new normal at most food stores.

Our new Publix has a few self checkouts as well as Winn Dixie.

I had a few glitches doing it myself but it was easier than waiting in long cashier line.

At Sams club they will scan your receipt and then scan 3 or 4 random items in your basket to make sure they were paid for as you exit the store.

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

@sarahpanda  I just read online that Walmart/Atlanta is closing their self check out because there has been so much theft.

I did not want to use self check but I prefer my own bags instead of the plastic bags and the sales staff did not want to touch my bags!!  So I started using self check and never looked back.  My dh went to the local gas station/carryout to buy chip dip, there was no cashier, he had to do his own self check...it's a gas station!!!!

Re: Grocery stores and self check-out

I shop at Kroger and they have many cashiers to check out your groceries. Once in a great while I will use a self checkout if I have a few items. I found the people watching the self checkout were very helpful.
