I agree with you that in various situations, sellers can get taken. Smiley Sad

Re: Got scammed on EBay-beware!

Scary. I have run into only a handful of problems (as a buyer and seller), and both eBay and PayPal backed me.

Re: Got scammed on EBay-beware!

I also sell on eBay and have since 2003.  If this seller's account was hacked he/she had or has no idea!

You have opened a dispute and that's good, you should.  Keep in contact with eBay, call them, ask for a supervisor and discuss exactly what happened and what eBay will do about it since the seller wasn't the one who scammed you.  Someone took over their account with the intent of intercepting payments.  You also need to talk to Paypal and explain what happened and what they plan to do about it.

But most importantly, I hope you paid by credit card because in that case you can dispute the purchase.  Call them and explain what happened and that you never received the merchandise because the seller was hacked and you are disputing the purchase.

I had my account hacked years and years ago but luckily I was doing business on line at the time and suddenly I couldn't get into my account. I called eBay immediately and after they "saw" what was happening they canceled my entire account in order to get rid of them.... the hackers listed (had a bot ready) over 150 Chanel bags in the 15 minutes they had my account~!  However had I not been on line and in and out of my account I would never have known until I tried to log in....  the money would have been diverted to their account!

It can be evil out there....  but my best advice is to stay on top of it and put pressure on Ebay, Paypal and your credit card company.  My best to you, I wish you good luck.....

@Tribesters

Also, PLEASE be wary of anyone contacting you from eBay and or Paypal with suspicious wording.  This could have been a phishing scam. (the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.)

When you open a dispute, eBay doesn't ask you to contact anyone, they do the investigation.

Please don't verify any information via email, such as credit card number.  CALL  or contact Paypal, directly,  they will issue a reference number to use when talking to them.

I had a buyer who bought a special edition Louis Vuitton from me.  Long story short she was planning to switch a counterfeit of the same bag and keep my authentic one but I wouldn't refund (found out she was selling counterfeits on another site).  Her reason was bogus.  She opened a dispute to force me to refund.  It went into arbitration and after 10 days I won the dispute.  Which royally angered her.  So then she tried to sell it herself on eBay and stole my pictures and text. Pictures and written word are protected as the property of the seller..... eBay took down her listing.

So YES, sellers have to be constantly looking out for the buyer scam.  They are out there too.... unfortunately.

When using PayPal

(which is like a bank to me because it simply exists to move your money)

I always choose "use a credit card" instead of deducting $ from our bank acct.

I told PayPal that we opt for this type of transaction in order to get the airline miles.

Re: Got scammed on EBay-beware!

I used to buy frequently on eBay.  I scaled back, then stopped all together.  Once in a blue moon I go toothed site.  Things have changed.  I buy maybe once a year now.  Sorry you've had issues.  I would think ebay would make good.

Re: Got scammed on EBay-beware!

My reasons for buying on Ebay:

I like unique hard to find items.

I like buying from individuals and I get a sort of pleasure in trusting them. A pleasure when the item arrives often even better than I had expected and faster than any from the Q, better packaged too.

I like giving positive feedback especially to new sellers who need it.

I can't know why a person is a seller, could be they're downsizing, or maybe they really need the money. If it's a need for money, it's  worth risking a bit of money, even a couple hundred, to be of some help.

@Q4u

Wow! That's scary about your account. I can't believe they would hack someone with recent activity. I figured it was just accounts that people hadn't used in a while.

I called PayPal about the problem but got transferred to eBay when asked if it was about an eBay transaction. I wanted to file a complaint with PayPal but it says online that if I do it will close my EBay dispute. It says to wait until the EBay dispute is resolved. The funny thing is EBay's the one that notified me the seller's account was hacked. The email they sent says to wait 3 days to see if the seller responds? Huh? When I talked to them on the phone they said I didn't have to do anything else. I haven't disputed the charge with my credit card yet because it sounded like the money would be refunded. I guess I'll give it a few more days & if I'm not refunded I'll dispute the charge.
