I believe giving complements and friendly smiles is essential with todays negativity. I do not believe someone has to look or act exceptional in order to receive a complement either, but it should be sincere. i greet at church and when I see a man or lady in a nice shirt, or color, etc, I always tell them so and their faces always brighten up and give a smile. When I am in a store, I also try to be observant of someone who looks a bit stressed: a mom with little kids, an older person who appears to be in pain, someone in line with just a few items, etc and try to say something friendly or offer my spot. It doesnt take much to be nice to others and it may be the only friendly thing that happened to them that day.
I am a retired high school teacher and had a young man who was a loner, never wanting to participate in the small group activies, had hair that stood up 3 ft in the air and wore dark make up arounf his eyes. I did a lot of small group cooperative learning activities and he would want to sit by himself. I would go over and sit down by him smiling and ask if it was okay if I could be his partner because my feet were killing me. He would give that look like I was from another planet but would shake his head okay. Sometimes I could crack into his soul and find out about him. One day towards the end of the year he sat down and layed his head down the entire class. When the bell rang ( this was the last class of the day), I asked him to stay a minute and he did. I put my hand on his back, sat down and talked to him, sharing how painful high school was to me at times and assured him in a short few weeks it was going to get so much better. Afterward, months later I received a letter from him, he was in Iraq in the Army. He thanked me and told me he was planning on killing himself that day and I saved his life with my kindness.

@Calcgirl That's incredible❤
Kindness and compliments go a long way. My life has been difficult for many years now, and sometimes the kindness of strangers helps to keep me going.
I like to give compliments, doesn't cost anything and it's good for the giver and the receiver.

@Desertdi Not sure what you mean. People watching?
@Shanus Nah...just "looking"...might be because I have a lot of ear piercings...ya know...from the '70's
Then again...I wear some outré eyeglass frames...(retro '70's also).
You might as well call me an "aging Hippie".........
@Desertdi I'm trying, but I can't figure out what this has to do with compiments?

@Ladybug724 People don't pay me compliments..... likely because they don't interpret my retro style.....

@Desertdi I'm sorry people don't compliment you.
But they're probably thinking good things about you!

My feeling on this topic?
"Tis better to give than to receive"!
I could elaborate, but will spare everyone.

You outta hear the compliments I give to beginning ice skaters, young or! Nothing picks those, really trying to learn, up(sometimes in actuality) more than a compliment on their improving.
I receive them also, some in question form, "you're how old again"? And who wouldn't like that?
