Revisiting this thread...
I don't care at all about the noise or the smell. That's part of life. We also burn leaves, branches, and twigs on part of our lot. A battery powered leaf blower or hedge trimmer isn't necessarily bad. In fact, that's what DH uses since he got tired of the cord. BUT, it's what he CHOSE without being forced.
Our yard is large. DH uses a Ryobi mower for a couple of passes, to get around the landscaping, and he uses a gas powered rider for the rest. As a senior citizen, there's no way I would ever want him to use a walk behind mower for our entire yard - especially in the kind of heat and humidity we've had this summer. I imagine the cost of an electric riding mower would be astronomical besides the cost of operation.

There are those, usually retired men, who love their leaf blowers. They're out morning, noon and evening. They watch trees for a leaf to fall and when one does, they're on it.

I have a battery operated push mower I love
it. No oil no spark plug no maintenance.
I can't pull start a gas mower, bad shoulder.
just plug battery into charger. Going back for the weed wacker bought at Home Depot.

My neighbor is one of those guys. He's new in town and didn't know the rules here. He was blowing all of his leaves and clippings out into the street which is against city ordinance. The wind blows his leaves onto my property so I kindly had a few words to say to him. He was totally understanding and didn't know there were such 'laws'. Now I need to have a discussion with him about his blowing snow out into the street...uh no.

where I live, a few cities North of me leaf blowers are outlawed. Some the decibels are pretty high. This City and others who have banned, them have a high rate of lawn/landscape maintainence workers..almost everyone. It was pretty bad they say between 8-12. It was all day but certain hours the noise was ear splitting. I hate them myself. I have had a man come for 20 years, and he only uses leaf blower on pavement, sidewalk, and very lightly on the lawn to move leaves to dirt area. My reason for hand raking garden and shrub area was all the mulch and too soil was gone in a couple months. He agreed. We pay him extra, and it helps. I'd habe all the camellias and gardenias sprouts exposed.

I have mowed our lawn for 40 years with a gas push mower. DH has a riding gas mower, but I haven't used it and he only used it for a couple of years due to his COPD. He does love his gas blower, but hasn't been able to use it this year. I have an electric blower which I love.
For me, its the fumes, I cannot tolerate them any longer. This year we have had someone else mowing the lawn and he does use gas equipment, I just make sure we don't go outside while that's going on. In our neighborhood, there are lots of lawn companies mowing, blowing, etc. If I happen to be out on my walk, I cover my nose and mouth until I get far enough away from them.
As for outlawing it, honestly, I don't care, I just want to breathe fresh air when I go outside.

I don't mind people using gas or electric blowers around here. I don't own a blower myself. I use a rake and a broom to do what I can to clean up my yard.
I think what bothers me the most is the dust a blower creates. In that dust are all kinds of germs including bird and rodent droppings amongst other things. I explained that to my lawn guy and then he started to wear masks whenever he used his blower. He told me that it made sense to wear a mask especially under trees where the droppings land.

For those with complaints , get your own law mover and mow your own lawn. This is a ridiculous law . Our country is trouble in many ways . I pay my gardener for the mowing and blowing and upkeep of my yard . You people are too picky . If they went manual and charged more for yard landscaping , I bet you would balk at the price , but you would not mow you own lawn and maintain it . There is a two way streak to every thing . Get real !!

@SilleeMee It's not only that, but as I said, if you cultivate a pretty big garden, it removes the mulch, and top soil, then exposes roots after a couple months. I was paying hundred to have mulch brought in, and put down. The blower removes all the mulch in a couple months...gone. If other people want to use blower, fine, But it is almost as quick with a rake. We timed it. Plus the gardeners ears aren't subjected to this sound all day, 5 days a week. Plus in the back, we don't want dirt and debris blown into pond. But this is us. Everyone had different needs.
