@sfnative, in the beginner/intermediate/professional is this one the latter?  Did you have a pattern # for this? Maybe someday.  I really like it.

@qualitygal

Answer to your question:

Purchased this pattern from "etsy," from designer "Serendipity as Always. " This scarf is called "Boho Soul Scarf."  The designer used one skein of Loops & Thread "Barcelona" yarn in color combo "Mocha" which is 328 yards.  Or, you may use a similar bulky (#5) weight yarn.  I used the Loops & Threads color pictures, as I had one skein remaining from making a grieving/comfort shawl (I make these to sell - have a business).  I love this yarn!  Though it's not uber-super soft, the colors and hues are well thoughout and I will make another one in Mocha, as pictured on the pattern photo.  Really love the rich colors on that one.  Plus, you'll need an M/N hook, which is nice and big for you to use.

Hooks:  The M/N will be a one-off purchase.  For a great set of hooks with silicone handles at THE BEST PRICE EVER, go to Amazon and input "Athena's Elements."  For $14.97 (believe that's the current price) you receive: A, B, C, D, E, G, 4.5mm, H, I, J, K, 7.0mm, L.  These have a "Boye" type point, which, in my mind is much more preferrable than the "Susan Bates" type flat/wide tip, which can be so difficult to get into many stitch types.  Also, many crocheters swear by their Clover hooks, which is fine.  However, they cost anywhere from $7.99-9.99 EACH.  So...using the $7.99 Clover price x 13 hooks, the total price for these hooks would be $103.87, plus tax and shipping.  My Athena's Elements cost me exactly $14.97, as I live in a "no tax" state and am a Prime member, so no shipping charge.  And, Athena's is owned and operated by a military wife, so she can take her business wherever her husband is stationed.

I've been crocheting for a long time, so can be honest her and tell you that this pattern is an advanced beginner project requiring the following skilks:

Magic Circle

Chain

Double Crochet

Treble Crochet

Front Post Double Crochet

Back Post Double Crochet

(I made a tassle for the bottom front)

Note: This scarf doesn't have to be worn as shown as seen in the pattern photo on esty: over either shoulder, whatever you want to do with it.  Make it look cowboy, too.  I want to do one of these with beads, as I just took a class in "Beading 3 Ways" at the Crochet Guild of America Conference.

@qualitygal  Where do you live?  Are you east coast, mid-west?  I'd be happy to help you learn.  My new website will be up soon and will have a feature relative to learning.  Wish I could give you my contact info, as I love teaching.  If you know Beautyjunkie from the Beauty Forum, she has my contact info.

Oh, yes, yarn source:  Michael's is the primary source for Loops & Threads yarn.  They have a new policy with which I disagree.  They are big-time pushing online ordering (pick-up in store and get free shipping), so have decreased by one entire aisle in my store, the amount of yarn they carry.  So...head to Michael's online and type in "Loops and Threads Barcelona."  You'll then be able to look at the various color combos.  Also, since all retailers are in seasonal change mode, don't know if Barcelona colors may be limited at this time.

In any case, I hope you can cruise past dreaming and make plans to learn.  I highly recommend crochet learning classes for a fee online at "Annie's."  I've taken one of Lena Skaverson's classes and she was absolutely fabulous.

(If you don't know how to crochet, suggest you start with a skein of Lion Brand Vanna's Choice and an "I" [as in "eye"] hook.  Purchase a small book on crochet for beginners on Amazon, or go to your library, learn how to do Single Crochet and make a simple scarf going back and forth [not "in the round and NOT in granny squares.  Keep it simple].  Make it about 8" wide and as long as you want, then add fringe.  Next would be to start to do the same thing with Double Crochet, then Treble Crochet, but make the length only about 24," as these will be practice pieces.  When done with these, learn how to do Front Post Double Crochet, followed by Back Post Double Crochet, in the same manner above [~24" of it].  Always return here for help, if you want.)

The way I look at it:  If I can make something this small - below - I can do anything.  I bet you've made something somewhere along the line that surprised you.  Keep that in mind, as you embrace a new craft.

Best of luck to you!

@sfnative, thanks for all that.  I'll copy and paste it, so I don't lose any of it. I'm putting the granny squares together now, getting ready to join them, and have a lap quilt to donate to one of the places that we support at the Senior Center.  I just love doing this.  Wish I was closer, I'd take your classes.  Thanks again!!

Sounds really great!   You can already create granny squares, so you should be able to build off of those skills in order to make this Boho scarf!    Down the road when you've tackled it and it's completed, please do post a photo.  Good luck!

Re: For Knitters and Crocheters: A cute-Silly Photo

@sfnative, Sorry I went to this one, since there's no hobby area to go to on this.

I have a question.  I don't understand when a pattern or tutorial says something to the affect of " multiple of 11 + 10 on the foundation row." It can be any other numbers this is just the one on the ripple afghan I'm looking at.  I don't get really what that means.

Thanks!! For the guage this has 32 on the chain.  I can't seem to figure it out. No one has explained that term.  Thanks.

I'm thinking of a shawl for my next project whether at the Senior Center or just here at home.

Re: For Knitters and Crocheters: A cute-Silly Photo

Perhaps the full context is missing from this quote?

If it is meant to be 11 + 10 FOR the foundation row, then it would mean that the width of the piece could be controlled by making the foundatioin (first) row the sum of 11(x) + 10.  This should be followed by turning (or no turn)  instuctions and subsequent row instructions.

If this is the case you will have to evalute the gauge and bend of the pattern along with your perference for width and lenght when the time for that comes..  Seems standard for this for this type of repeative pattern.

I doubt that a ripple pattern would ever call for 10 as a chain.  That would not be appropriate even for changing colors and it appears that this is not a border.

This drives just about everyone up the wall.  What pattern designers assume is that the crocheter has a ton of knowledge already on board, but that is SO not the case across the board!

Regarding the foundation row:

  1. In many instances, the pattern will say "ch 62 plus 2, turn" or something like that.  We like this!
  2. In creating a ripple afghan, you will crochet (either single crochet, half double crochet or double crochet) a specific number throughout the pattern, then increase and decrease at regular intervals.  The 11 + 10 chains (to establish the foundation row) will provide the multiple required to achieve the “hills,” “valleys” and “roads” between them. In other words: the Vs, up-side-down Vs, plus uphill and downhill sections between them. I wonder what stitch was being used in the demo, as the number of chains in a ‘turn’ is dependent upon the stitch used.

Patterns: I'm going to refer you to Red Heart's "Ultimate Guide to Chevron Crochet."  Just google that title and it will pop up for you.  There are many free patterns with the counts ready for you.  I will say, though, that I've come across so many bad ripple patterns by independent designers it's ridiculous.  Just make sure it's from a reputable designer or design house.  I'd like to direct you to Red Heart patterns, all of which are free and they have a chat room to help you, too, just to start things out.

Let's say you're using double crochet (basing it on the 11 plus 10).  Here's an example of how you would crochet a small pattern for practice purposes, once you get started with a chain of 65 + 4:  *dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next 6 sts, dc3tog* (this is a decrease), [dc in ea of the next 7 sts, 3dc in next st (this is an increase), dc in each of the next 7 sts, dc3tog], repeating [  ] until the end.  Ch 4, turn and repeat from *.  Note: do not know what stitch the 11+10 is based on, so with a 4 chain turn, may not work.

* This makes a valley-

To dc3tog (double crochet 3 together), do the following:

Always start this as you would a dc by yarning over once, then

insert hook into next stitch

yo, draw up a loop - - yo, pull through 2 loops

insert hook into next stitch

yo, draw up a loop - - yo, pull through 2 loops

insert hook into next stitch

yo, draw up a loop - - yo, pull through 2 loops - -yo, pull through remaining loop.

This makes a hill-

Insert hook in dc of previous row and make 1 dc in that st.  Repeat 2 more times into that same st.

You should have 3 dc in the same dc st of the previous row.  They will fan out a bit.  You have now made an increase and created a hill in this pattern.

You've essentially used 3 stitches to help create a decrease in your ripple afghan.  This creates a "valley."  The 3dc in the same stitch creates a "hill."  So in making a ripple afghan you are crocheting X number of stitches then a hill, then X number of stitches, followed by creating a valley, followed by X number of stitches, followed by a hill, etc., to the end, then chain the appropriate #, turn and continue.

In other words, the maker crochets uphill, crochets an upsidedown V, crochets downhill, crochets a V, crochets uphill, crochets an upsidedown V, and so on.  Though the Vs don't look like Vs right away, that's what you're creating.  Or, hills and valleys, if you wish.

Re: For Knitters and Crocheters: A cute-Silly Photo

@sfnative, Thank you ever so much?  Lots of info there for me.  At least I feel better about feeling crazy on those numbers.  Once again, I copied it for reference. Thanks for taking the time to do all that.  I did go to the Red Heart site yesterday, after watching a tutorial of theirs.  It was a good one too.

Onward and upward. LOL.

@Still Raining, I know, from what you said, that it doesn't make sense to chain up 10.  That's why it's so crazy...thanks for your help too on this.
