Re: Feeling a bit scammed by new dentist

@madzonie Without going through all of the pages, if your gums are involved I'd go to a peridontist.  They also do implants.  Your gums should be with a specialist if you have any problems!

@madzonie As I see it, this was an **attempted** scam since, thankfully, you didn't give him any money!

@Desertdi :  75k to reposition your jaw? Amazing!  Many years ago my Dentist reset my jaw (I was suffering from TMJ); cost less than $300 and 30 yrs later, no problem!

@patbz   I have a slight overbite, but no TMJ.    No dentist (other than THAT ONE),  has ever mentioned surgery. Di

Re: Feeling a bit scammed by new dentist

20 yrs ago, I got a flyer in the mail from a local dentist offering free cleanings - so I went over there. After the cleaning, they told me I needed cosmetic dentistry (that's their specialty) and said it would cost $10,000 (in today's dollars $20,000). I ran out of the office so quick and a few days later, the dentist had the nerve to call me on the phone and ask why I was upset. I told him to take a hike and, of course, I never went back. It's hard for the average person to believe that professionals are liars and scammers - but they are.

Wow, this subject hits home for me as well.  There SHOULD be some type of protection and regulations.  Have you ever seen a poor dentist?   Here's my story.  A few years ago, I was in the market for a new dentist after my dentist retired and sold his practice. I went to the new dentist once and could see the lies that would be spewed from his mouth as soon as he walked in the room and I was right.  So now I need to find another new dentist. I go ask around and got a referral from a relative of mine.  This new dentist seemed okay at first and I had a few appointments with him until one day the you know what hit the fan.  At this one appointment he told me I needed a root canal.  Okay,I had been through this type of procedure before, however, I wasn't experiencing any severe pain (and I know what severe nerve pain feels like) and his evasiveness with the xray and what it showed raised a red flag.  I started to ask him questions about the tooth he wanted to root canal and he seemed annoyed.  When I asked more questions he got irrate and told me that if I shut up he could perform the work. I looked at him and said I can't believe you just talked to me like that.  I calmly got up from the dentist chair and ripped off the paper bib and placed it on the chair and said I'm leaving.  The look on his face was priceless. His face was shocked and stunned.  I walked out and the women behind the desk heard it and said nothing.  I said I'll be back to pick up the xrays which I paid for and I did return a few days later and made him give me everything.  I now have yet another new dentist and so far so good. Keeping fingers crossed.

Re: Feeling a bit scammed by new dentist

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

I so appreciate all the comments, suggestions and concerns you've all expressed regarding my dentist dilemma. I do plan to seek another opinion.

My oral surgeon gave the names of two dentists he thinks would be good. At that time we weren't sure what was going to happen with my old dentists's practice. I kept the business cards and will work on getting another opinion on all this so-called work they say I need.

Thank you again!!

Trust  is such an important quality when we are dealing with our health. Talk to him and if you still have doubts, find another Dr.

My dentist has always told be no dental work will last forever so do not do it until it is really necessary.

@madzonie It sounds like a scam to me also. And I would get a second opinion also. But there again there goes some more money.

Re: Feeling a bit scammed by new dentist

I agree with everyone else who told you to find another dentist.  You do not have to use that new dentist so relax, throw away his estimate and start over.  I wish you lots of luck, hope you find someone you like and trust.
